The stronger organization will get your daughter many more looks than the weaker organization. I wouldn’t worry about the communication/coaching issues at this point.
Most colleges could care less about your high school career. There are a ton of external factors that come into play in HS ball (size of school, coach’s knowledge, skill level of players around you, etc....) so it really is a mixed bag for softball players in HS. If you are on a decent HS...
When my DD was younger, she used to place her bat on her shoulder and lift the bat about two inches. This was a good reference point to get into the same position each at bat. This made her swing more repeatable, level, and more compact with hands inside the ball. The bat was off her...
At the age group and level described I recommend the following.
Group your players into three separate groups A, B, and C level players based on skill. (Roughly equal amounts of players). During pool games I try to play everyone equally and have roughly the same amount of each group on the...
I’m definitely not going to refuse a beer with almost anyone! College Coaches can definitely evaluate talent fairly quickly. They are however also interested in seeing how a player performs under pressure and how the react after a strikeout, an error, or a tough loss. No coach expects a...
I remember several games where coaches would instruct their players to not swing the bat until they have 2 strikes. The 3B coach would then proceed to go through 30 seconds of signals between pitches.
Full disclosure. My DD played on younger teams that did this routinely. This method...
Even though I don’t agree with your approach, I understand your thought process. I do have a question however on how you would handle a game in which a pitcher or batter is being actively evaluated by a College Coach in a close ball game? Do you still use the same approach to make it to the...
A coach can either play to win trophies or play to develop softball players.
If your priority is to win as many games as possible, then the clock becomes a real issue. Lots of things are within your control to slow down ballgames. Some of these tactics can get really bizarre (equipment...
Rawlings Heart of The Hide gloves are fantastic. DD has owned two of them over the years. Frustrating thing with Rawlings is they are constantly changing the lineup/design. They even did away with HOH fast pitch models several years ago which pushed her to Nikons gloves. Current glove...
You get better by playing and practicing with better competition. DD has played up multiple times and it definitely helped her development. The only exception IMO is playing up but sitting the bench.
Leaving a team is never easy. DD has only changed teams 2x in 12 years, but both times it was to play on better teams as she had “outgrown” her current team. DD is very competitive and in both cases she came to realization that a change was necessary to grow as a player. Looking back the...
Changing teams is never easy as friendships have been made over time. DD changed organizations twice in 12 years. Both times it was to continue her development as a player. This is ultimately the question that only you and your DD can answer. A lot of this has to do with your long term goals.
I use an umpire (old school catchers) mask. It easy to take on and off. I use it as needed when catching DD. She’s getting faster and stronger while I’m getting older and slower. Not a good combination....
Fairly common tactic that is used to help get a stolen base. I’m not sure how effective the tactic is, but DD has been called upon to swing and miss on purpose to help move the runner. Probably effective with less experienced teams and players.
We have also used a swing and miss with a...
Goal of any HS sport is to win a championship. The challenge is what type of players do you have and what type of conference do you play in A vs AAAAA. High school ball in my opinion is a combination of managing and developing players ( there is a difference!). Softball is a tough sport to...
