    College Coaches Lying?

Happens all the time in competitive softball. Unfortunately, the parents often get in the middle and decide "what is best" for their kid, instead of letting the kid decide (causes their kid to be known as a "team jumper"). Always a good idea to check a coach out before committing. If he/she...

    Tanel360 or Ringor

Ringors are the best softball cleats made.

    High School vs Travel Ball

High school in our area is actually pretty good. However, the depth of the teams falls quite a bit short from travel ball teams. We have quite a few outstanding pitchers in our area (pretty much all play competitive in the spring/summer. Our high school ball is in the fall (starts next week)...

Softball Tryouts - Are You or Your Daugther Nervous?

My daughter was allowed the honor of throwing out the first pitch at an ASA national tournament last week (her team won Metro's Championship and was the host team). She was absolutely the most nervous I have ever seen her on a softball field. During games, tryouts, etc. she has always been...

What's Better - Nationals or Exposure Tournament?

I would have to say exposure tournaments.

    Radar Gun

My daughter developed her drop ball and ball spin/movment and had a lot more success. Fast pitchers dominate mediocre teams, but good teams like straight speed...it's easier to hit it 225 feet. I have used the glove radar and found it to be pretty accurate.

    Pitchers hitting

My daughter is one of three pitchers on her team. When not pitching, she is the team's third baseman. She always hits, whether pitching or playing third.

Why do you coach youth softball?

I am going to try to get back into coaching next season (with my daughter's team). I coached for seven years previously and stepped away for a little break. One thing I always really enjoyed was seeing a player improve over the course of a season. I also ALWAYS made a point of praising...

    Front Shoulder Flying Open

Work on hitting to right field...This forces the player to let the ball get further in and may help on the timing. Watch the front front on the stride/load. Make sure it is not turning too soon (causing the front should to follow). Usually causes the hands to drop and a long looping swing.

high school pitching distance - 40 or 43 feet?

I have a 15 year old that pitches. I think moving them back to 43' would be fine. Just would take a little adjustment and practice from that distance. We're only talking 3 feet.

    What is most important?

Good post Sluggers!! Totally agree! There isn't that much scholarship money in softball anyway. My oldest daughter (now 22 and college graduate) was an extremely talented softball player, but didn't want to play college. Fortunately, she had great HS grades and most of her college was paid...

    16U Goldd

All divisions in most sanctions (everything under 18) only has A, B and C. "Gold" level is 18s only. My personal experience is that most of the distinction between A and B is baloney. Any team can say that they are an "A" team, etc. From the college standpoint, playing A or B doesn't really...

    rules

Not out... Per USSSA: Sec. 12 CATCH: A catch is a legally caught ball which occurs when a fielder secures a batted or thrown ball with his hand or glove. If the ball is merely held in the fielder's arms or is prevented from dropping to the ground by some part of the fielder's body or...

    Parents!!!!!!!

Part of coaching. When I coached teams, I often recruited based on parents as much as player's abilities.

Welcome to Being a Softball Parent

I coached fast pitch for seven years. Enjoyed the coaching. Stopped coaching a couple of years ago, to take a break from parents. It's funny, the dads that caused the most problems were the ones that only came to games ever so often. Now, I'm just a dad watching his daughter play (her team...

    DD is dropping hands first

Generally, a long swing, with hands dropping is due to front side opening up early (usually on load/stride). It can also be due to too long a stride. I personally like the tee idea. Set it up high and have her hit. I'm also a big fan of the zip-n-hit. You can get a lot of repetition and...

    Costs of playing

As a former coach, and current treasurer of my youngest daughter's team, I can tell you that most parents don't quite grasp the expense of a traveling team. Entry fees, insurance, equipment, uniforms, etc. all add up. Sponsors help, but with the current economy, many businesses are refusing to...

    ASA vs NSA

My daughter plays mostly USSSA and ASA (in Missouri). They are the main sanctions in KC and St. Louis. AFA used to be pretty big, but not so much this year. As a former coach, I liked USSSA because of the flexibility in the lineup, etc. I also think that ASA is still the one everyone looks to...
