FYI Blue, the strike zone is described in the rule book

From the standpoint of a parent with a daughter that is very much a finesse pitcher, any pitcher that show control should absolutely earn the corners. Taking the corners away also puts her in a dangerous position because she's about 35' in front of a batter trying to hit the ball where it's...

    How far do you travel

3 hours one way in good traffic once a week for 8 short weeks (due to HS season). During off season, once a week Jan & Feb. Pitching coach 3 hours one way too, we live in the middle of no where! 2 1/2 summers of crazy travel, could be worse. It's worth it.

What do HS stats really tell us (imho)

Love your quote! Who said "It is not the critic who counts: not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles......" I couldn't agree more with your observation of the local pride as our community is seeing that with our softball team right now. As our other school sports seem to be on...

What do HS stats really tell us (imho)

I think it should be just as important for players to understand the basic stats as it is for them to understand the fundamentals of a good swing. I had a senior ask me if a sac bunt counted against her average! One senior kept book for a game and on a full count the pitcher threw drop ball...

What do HS stats really tell us (imho)

I was paging through some stats for our state and found some curious numbers. For instance, one school that has been undefeated by large margins traveled to a school in a smaller conference for a loss by 1. Having played at that school, I know how the coach operates, the disadvantage a...

    Define dugout - please!

I did find this on the NCAA website: 2.9 Dugouts It is recommended that all intercollegiate softball facilities have dugouts that are enclosed at each end and at the rear. Each dugout must be large enough to accommodate all players and team personnel (approximately 25 people). It is recommended...

    Define dugout - please!

Is the dugout defined by a physical structure or by a designated area in relation to the bases? We were at a high school game in which the 1st base dugout was beyond first base with a big concrete garbage bunker where the dugout should be. One of the asst coaches sat on a bucket behind the...

    Who should call and why?

This is also a helpful strategy when pitcher is forced to throw to a small strike zone. Control the batter.

    Who should call and why?

Doe's the best! She was amazing and the kids and parents loved her! She had all the catchers in the palm of her hand and they worked their tails off!

Help with pitching to small strike zone

I like what ScottBev pointed out in regards to the catcher. We will have to pay closer attention to how she's setting up on the inside pitches. We're dealing with tight strike zones at the varsity level and it's difficult. Any suggestions are appreciated. My daughter has all 6 pitches but...

    Who should call and why?

I attended a clinic with Doe Denmon, one of ASA's most decorated catchers and she believes whole heartedly that catchers need to learn to call their own games. Of course she emphasized "learn". She recommended at a young age to have the coach help the pitcher and catcher learn to make the...
