Practice swings hitting the players in their back - Why?

Yes many times it is the shoulder.......................with Piazza as well. Actually more often than not Piazza hits his shoulder. I looked at many Piazza swings and never saw one similar to what was posted here. They all were shoulder hits with little to no back contact. Definitely not the big thudding hits to the square of the back that were the subject of this thread.

Bottom line is IF an Elite hitter does it, it's a definite outlier. You can't bank on outliers.

I agree should not be a big thud, but touching of the back every once in a while or getting dang close is not that uncommon. I found 2 HOF and maybe 2 future HOF players do sometimes in a short amount of time.

Several other players with 2 hand finishes bat is heading toward the back/shoulder but stops a little prior. Hard to tell if the player stops it or just momentum stops it. Wade Boggs for example the bat finishes 6-8” from the back. I could see with women being in general more flexible the bat continuing 6-8” and touching the back.
