Practice swings hitting the players in their back - Why?

Elite hitters do not do this. Once I got my DD to stop hitting her back and truly getting to extension, she starting hitting HR's within weeks. No lie! When you hit your back you are not actually achieving full extension, you are folding your arms around your back and your lower half stops rotating.

Real Talk: Stop taking practice swings where your hands go down to your waist! Practice swing taking your hands across your chest or neck! All the other stuff doesn’t matter 😉

Also yes I do agree that coaches need to teach why you should do it instead of saying just do it. It can actually be very very helpful if you know what you are doing!
Preach! Coaches take note - if you can't explain the purpose of a drill, and articulate it to your players, maybe you should reconsider the drill. I suspect the people that need to hear that aren't reading this forum though.

Elite hitters don't need to do it because they have their swing down. When you hit your back you want to make sure that your bat barrel is diagonal on your back going down and that tells you whether or not you extended or not. It makes my lower back rotate more because I want to hit my back. People do this all differently and it all depends on why you do it. Some people do it because they think it looks good (which is not a reason to do it), because other people do it, or because they just want to. If you truly know why you are doing it doing this truly helps but if you are doing it just because you want to it does mess up with your mechanics because you are thinking to just hit your back and not focus on what you are trying to accomplish. I do not recommend always doing this because when you always do it you forget what you are trying to accomplish. I just do this when I feel like I need more extensions so I can see where my bat ends up after I swing. I have a problem with swinging all the way through and not quiting once I hit the ball and this definitely helps as a reminder. Lastly, if we roll our wrists then the bat does not get that perfect angle when it hits your back. It tends to be more flatter when you roll your wrists. Doing this gives you a good indication of what you did wrong. Again this is not for everyone and if you do it just to do it it will mess up your swing if you do it constantly.
If it works for you great. There is no way where I can see this helps you with extension. If anything, it shortens your swing and causes you to roll your wrist. To me if I hit my back, it's telling me that there's something wrong in my swing. My arms are collapsing, and I am losing power.

Mike Piazza was the first to come to mind.
When you can only think on 1 player in the MLB...

i have shared this story several times. My DD fought me on this during our hitting session in the softball dojo.(Garage) I had to walk away or I would have punched her in the throat. LOL. Next team practice she got my attention so I could watch her next swing. She did what we were working on to my surprise! Not hitting her back with FULL extension through the swing utilizing full shoulder turn, actually letting go with her right hand . She gave me a thumbs up and she was all in on the swing change. The very next tournament in her very last at bat of the fall season, she hit the top of the fence. She had warning track power 2 weeks prior.

Fast forward to freshman HS season. Her very first official AB, she hit her very first OTF HR.

Not saying it should be taught, and do not get the point of it either. Just remember Piazza thumping his back.

Ohtani and Harper bats sometimes touch the back but more of a brush. Many times it is the shoulder.
