I'm well aware the stats (Estimated probability of competing in college athletics | NCAA.org - The Official Site of the NCAA), but unfortunately, I couldn't convince her to play ice hockey instead of field hockey. ;-)

In DD case, *if* she becomes a div I player, it will be 100% due to her club coach who has been through the process three times over the last 12+ years with three different teams that he personally developed from 10U to 18U Gold. Unfortunately, we just found out about this club, so DD is a little behind the curve which is why she has a lot of work to do before 1 Sep 2020 which is why time is a premium, and 3-4 months per year playing HS ball the next two years is a significant time suck in the small recruiting window. So, yes, in this particular scenario, if DD *had* to choose between HS ball vs her club team, there is no comparison about which one will increase her probability of playing div I and which one will have ZERO effect.

And, yes. DD HS coach is not only clueless but has been verbally abusive (i.e. non-constructive criticism) with some of the girls, and has only 3 other travel players on the team, and politics include upperclassmen get more playing time although DD overcame that being the only starting freshman and finally earned #1 starting pitcher by the end of the season, and a case could be made that she was the major factor in their first winning season in 6 years.

And, just to clarify, she is playing 14U ball this spring and even could play 14U for a 3rd year next spring, since she has a January birthday, but her club coach plans for the whole 14U team to be playing 16U ball by the fall anyway.

QUOTE=marriard;473550]Good to hear she is with a good travel coach.

Make sure you count the players who DON'T make it to college as well as the ones who do. Also take note of how many talented players who came to the club that were already developed.

At this point, you should not be shocked by how many players end up on D1 (and other level) rosters in spite of their coaches and how many clubs who claim players 'developed' who were developed elsewhere. The coach to college player relationship is not always causal. Talent wins out a lot - so does 'looking the part' (you also shouldn't be stunned by the number of 6' tall pitchers in college who suck at pitching but 'look' like they should be good).

Our travel program have put lots of girls into college over the years - some have gone above their level, some below. Playing HS ball - even bad HS ball - hasn't hurt any player get recruited in any way - in many cases it has helped (leadership roles, playing different positions, dealing with coaches and different people on their own, etc, etc).

This is indeed true.

It is also maybe not a reason not to play HS ball if she wants to.

There are lots of reasons not to play HS (abusive coaches, no travel players, political BS and so on), but wanting a D1 scholarship probably isn't one. Thinking of it as a critical path project is nice - but maybe not entirely healthy (and I make a major portion of my living as a project manager so that hurts to write). Taking some time to play HS for what is normally 3-4 months isn't going to effect the D1 goal in any meaningful way. If she absolutely WANTS to choose club over HS - also not a problem - that really isn't going to make a major difference either.

Also is there really competitive 16U/18U to play during the HS season - in 14U there is because a lot of kids that age are not in high school?[/QUOTE]

I wasn't implying *ALL* HS ball sucks; in our area and in particular DD's HS, it's a joke. DD's HS has nationally ranked lacrosse and field hockey teams who both won championships this year, and softball has only ever won one B conference championship which was six years ago which was their last winning season. That said, DD HS team lost the semi-finals this year to the undefeated team in the bottom of the 7th with 2 outs with her on the mound due to an unearned run.

DD has been raised to care nothing about trophies, pins, or patches (dime a dozen), but only developing her game (whatever the sport) the best she can be to achieve HER goal of playing div I.

Of course, every DD has different goals and values, so more power to those that live in areas where HS softball is queen.

I know. I gave you the answer you wanted. I have defended HS Coaches for a very long time here but it seems more popular and in line with membership to simply concede that HS Coaches suck. I am shocked that the TB Coach wants your dd to quit HS ball and almost as shocked to find out that there was gambling at Ricks.

A bunch of silly players of mine went toe to toe with our rival school tonight for our conference championship. They went into the 7th inning trailing 3-1. Some silly HS coach took one of these players yesterday and told her she is wasting her talent and could be so much more. In fact, this silly coach took this girl and threw her curve balls away and "rise balls" up and it and challenged her to the point that it got real serious. That girl hit a laser home run in her first at bat and then, hit a monster blast in the 7th with a runner on to tie the score. We won in the 8th on an in the park home run. Yup. two girls from the other team tried to catch a gap shot and ran into each other and our player never stopped running. The screams, the cheers, the tears, hugs, ... were something to see. This same team, that no one gave any credit to early this year, beat a nationally ranked team from a school two times our size. They aren't TB stars. They are hard chargers. Tonight, they are conference champs and are 17-6 on the year.

On another note, when you walk into our school by the gym, you walk past the trophy case. You can see all of these softballs in one case denoting perfect games and no hitters. You can see photos and certificates of all of the All State players in my school's history. I sometimes stop to look at some of those balls. My dd threw a few of those perfect games. Her picture and 1st Team All State Plaque are displayed for all to see. We produce a "record book." My dd is in just about every category for both pitching and hitting. In my dd's room is her Letter Jacket which she is so proud of. It has 4 All Conference First Team patches on it. It has 3 conference championship patches on it. It has 4 First Team All Area Patches on it. It has her All State Patches. Heck on one sleeve, it even has her All Area and All Conference Golf Patches on it. (She could have gone to college to play golf.) The yearbook, her senior year, had a special section that outlined her accomplishments. That is ... well here I go attempting to dissuade you and let your dd play HS ball.

Stick to you guns, there is nothing positive in HS ball.

I hope your dd finds the right path to her dreams. If D-I is that dream, then I hope she achieves it. My dd was able to achieve most of her goals with the exception of winning a national championship. It is pretty special to see the dds of DFP achieve their goals.

I gotta tell you- DD was at a college camp a few years ago when they separated the pitchers out and had them throwing. 5’-2” DD was throwing with 6’-0” tall, stud-looking pitchers, and she was doing better than them! she was very stoked after because the coaches all saw it too, and let her know.

I am shocked that the TB Coach wants your dd to quit HS ball and almost as shocked to find out that there was gambling at Ricks.
CB, you are the BOMB! (No pun intended) thank you for defending HS coaches and sharing your personal experiences. Like The American Dream, its good to hear that HS softball is still alive and a real sport in some places!

Vic- you have noted that your DDs dream is to go DI. There are LOTS of DI schools with a wide range of talent. It is now after the May 1 deadline to officially commit to a college, but my DD and I are still getting emails from college softball programs, some of which are DI.
Is there any particular conference(s) shes shooting for? I think its great that shes an excellent student and looking to play for DI programs! There is a LOT out there, so “choose wisely”!
Good luck!

This.
We had 3 years of less than stellar HS coaching, finally have a good coach this year. We chose our club coach based on his reputation, the HS coach is what it is and you can't change that.
HS ball has had it's ups and downs but DD is actually really upset that it's almost over because while it hasn't always been good she's been playing with these girls since 2nd grade for the most part.

And from what I hear, they are having a phenomenal season!

First - if your DD achieves enough to play good college softball, it is at BEST MAYBE 10% due to a coach or an org. And that is a real reach. If your DD wants it, it will be 100% on her. Everyone else is an enabler and supporter - our family, her coaches, her coaches, her instructors, the organization etc. My DD is heading toward the end of her recruiting journey and it is all on her - lots of help on the way and lots of help to come, but it doesn't matter who the coach is, or parents, or instructor or whatever if the talent/work ethic/commitment/etc isn't there. Playing for X may get you some more looks and access to their network, but in the end if you can't perform when the looks happen then it wont matter. We have helped lots of girls over the years - and we as an org are proud that we got to help and be part of each girls journey - but it is 100% their achievement.

Nothing against your coach who I don't know, but you always have to keep your eyes open. If you can find photos or can talk to parents of their last time through - check out how many players stayed through the whole time. Is it 2? 5? If it is a lot then congrats - that is totally rare. Our teams turn over 3-4 players most seasons (lots of options locally)

We have a org here locally that is known to 'produce college players' - it is BS - they have never, ever developed a player - but they used to suck up all the talent everyone else developed. A lot of girls they claim were already committed before they joined.

And, just to clarify, she is playing 14U ball this spring and even could play 14U for a 3rd year next spring, since she has a January birthday, but her club coach plans for the whole 14U team to be playing 16U ball by the fall anyway.

That sounds right. Our second year 14U teams rarely plays in 14U unless they are trying to qualify for something.

DD's number #1 college criteria is an excellent computer science program which thankfully, many D1 schools in the Big 10, ACC, Patriot League, Big East, and CAA satisfy, so she's got a top 20 list right now, but she's got *realistic* expectations given her current and potential abilities. Let's just say she's not putting all her eggs in the *pitching* basket, since she's 5'3.5", but DD's idol is nowGeorgia's Kylie Bass (5'0"). ;-)

That said, her club coach says that her bat alone could get her into her #1 school where he just placed a freshman with a big bat on a full free ride. Of course, that assumes that school's head coach is still there in 2 years. ;-)

If you’re around Saturday morning we have a BIG game in Norton. Should be a great game.

What time? That's a major showdown! Kelly Nelson's been virtually unhittable this season. We have them on Wednesday for a non-conference game.

Last night our girls beat Braintree in 12 innings! Was an amazing game.
