    Parent and Player Question

Sometimes the parents are more of a emotional wreck after a big loss than the players. Maybe she thought she was doing the right thing by removing her DD from the situation after the game? Bottom line for me is as a coach, I would talk with the parent first and find out if she lost her...

Skipping practice to sub for another team?

My feeling is that if the coach is asking because he has players out and needs enough to field a team, I might be inclined to allow them to play. If it's for the sole purpose of trying to field a better team with our player, than it's not happening. Go get and/or develop better players.

Thoughts on team discipline for the actions of a few?

It's not fair to the girls if this keeps happening. The coach needs to have a meeting with the parents and the player and talk about the behavior. If the coach is not strong enough to do that, I would question the leadership from the coach and I would change teams next season. This season we...

Advice for FBC when using a pitching machine?

What we do with our girls that have this same issue is we cut a tennis ball in half and place it under the outside of the back foot so most of the weight is on the inside of the back foot. The ball gives a little so and helps the girls moving laterally without changing their stance. The first...

    Infield/outfield indoor practice drills

Here is one drill that the girls really liked that has helped with infield/outfield communications: (sorry we have never taken video of this) We run two lines of outfielders on one end of the gym with one line of infielders. (Think of it as a SS and a left and center fielder, as far as...

    Infield/outfield indoor practice drills

Give us some guidance here- how many players, age, about how big of a space, is it just you or do you have some help with running the drills?

    Little help?

Eric, you are correct on plays in the field the catchers still kept the mask ON. I should have been more specific. I was referring to pop-ups or plays where they have to turn and find the ball quickly, like a passed ball. I do believe in all cases with plays where there was a hit "in play" and a...

    Little help?

Lol, agreed but that is not what I meant. I should have clarified. If they are making the same play with or without the mask, which do they feel more confident making a play on the ball, on or off?

    Little help?

We agree that it's safer and better for the player to leave it on. I think if they make a rule change like they did for the 2 examples (catcher obstruction) you used, it would be much easier to get the catchers to change. If the player felt as comfortable making plays with it leaving it on as...

    Little help?

I agree that if safety is the reason why you want them to keep it on, we are on the same page. I am not sure I would call it poor catching technique to take it off though. Usually players girls or boys migrate to taking it off at some point as they get older. I guess it's more a visual thing...

    Little help?

I know what NECC teaches but I think this is really all personal preference. I understand it's safer to have on but I never wanted my mask on when I was making a play on the ball after the pitch. Most catchers still take it off. The last 3 college softball games I have been too all the catchers...

How to make a kid HATE school ball in 3 easy steps

Unfortunately these is still a lot of this that still happens at the MS and HS level. They go by what they feel and their attitude rather than what they see, if they have an agenda. "Daddy ball" get played at the TB level as well but they usually get to pick their coach so the parents have more...

    Finally!!!!

As a TB coach I like the rule (not to play during school) for the burnout factor. On the other hand when I go to a MS school practice and see 16 - 19 players with just one coach, I can't help but think their development slows down. If feel for those coaches in that position too.

    Easton catcher helmet question

Twin, I can't answer all parts of your question but what I can tell you is that my DD has last year's Mako and after summer, fall and training this winter it has held up very well. I had purchased one for my son and it fit her head so well she wanted one. If you can get that Mako for under $100...
