Sounds like a the runner had a brain cramp, but.... I do recall a post from a few months back where a few posters expressed opinions that runners practicing going from 1st to 2nd on grounders to the right and the left sides was a waste of time. Not worthy of devoting entire practices to, but this is certainly something that needs to be experienced in practice before it happens in a game IMO.

I agree. It needs to be talked through, and it needs to be practiced. Not for an entire practice, but certainly give some experience with it. You can also practice it as part of ground ball drills, or 21 Outs, or however you're practicing defense. Baserunners need to know it and live it. Otherwise, that simple mistake may cost you a game.
