There is still an assortment of barrel path being coached and used.
Most would say a barrel which is travelling downwards at contact, which is what I see in many of the 1993 swings, is not optimal unless you are looking to hit the ball on the ground 🤷‍♂️

Well I agree .
However describing what is being seen and what is being talked about can get blurred. Why I tend to stay out of hitting discussion.

Enjoy discussion,
Glad video prompted chat!

I’ll say it.

The swings are godawful.

Flat bats. Low vba.

They try to get into a good position to hit but they aren’t ready to hit because they are standing straight up and having to rush to get into posture. Late. Not on time.

Because they are trying to keep their bats “flat” their arms get long and they have absolutely no power. They top every ball. Which was apparently the goal back then.

Pick any modern bomb dropper with a powerful swing, put that Easton solid aluminum billet bat in their hands. Give her a week to adjust and she would be confounding the outfield with bombs, rockets and lasers. Alo can hit a ball 220 with that bat. I mean, as long as she isn’t being told to “just put the ball in play”.

2021 UCLA, Oklahoma or Florida State would beat either team 4 out of 5 games I bet.

Lisa Fernandez is indeed a truly awesome player.

The only limitations on her game were the coaching of the day.

In video said She hit .510 in season.
How would you interpret her hitting mechanics then?

Fernandez had better mechanics than most of the players for sure which is why she was a better hitter. Still think if she played today her swing would be better.

@RADcatcher

Better than the rest. She scores the first run by hitting a ball in the air, over the infield.

I have no idea what kind of competition UCLA played throughout a full season in the early 90’s. (Eta: Even today, preseason college stats inflate players season long stats. I prefer to look at conference stats vs full season stats, considering what conference a team plays in.)

I think all of those hitters see the ball well.

The next evolution in hitting was probably from “put the ball in play” to “hit line drives” and more recently “hit the ball over the fence”. As that happened, mechanics evolved?

I’m pretty convinced the evolution of mechanics and strength training has changed the game more than the bats.
