I will take the toughness of Romero over a dainty girl like Munro 99 times out of 100. She should have never hesitated - she knows it - good reminder to all the little DD's out there that even the best are not perfect.

"Dainty"? Ummm...no. Munro is 5'-10" (5" taller than Romero), and is one of the fiercest competitors on the field. I would put my chips on Aubree to get the out.

I thought it was hard once she hesitates to let the ball get by the pitcher and the SS fields it, if she breaks for home and the SS throws home she is out by a mile, I replayed in several times to be sure. Even if she decides to run once she sees the SS break for second if SS turns and comes home instead of 1B again she is out by a lot.

The play was not as cut and dry or easy as it looks after the fact....defense tries to turn two equals automatic run scored from third

All that being said...you gotta score on that play some how some way! But if she would have been gunned down at the plate...would everyone here be saying "why so aggressive with 0 outs how can you make first out at the plate"

There is no way the SS makes the throw home on Romero. The SS would have had to stop, turn her body almost 270 degrees, and throw home. Let's say the impossible happens and she gets Romero out at home. Now you have runners on first and second with one out.

Watch from the 2:30 mark:

I have the definitive word on this, my 10 year old says that with the way the SS is positioned when fielding that there is no way she could get Romero at home, she says she would go every time, I told her I disagreed with her and that Romero could have been out at home but she says that in the 7th inning you have to go for it.

On plays like this, if the coach has to say something, it is too late. You have to mention to the runner that they have a "read" and that they have to make that read and go or don't go. Often, in practices, I had teams study angles from 3B and as a runner. It can be practiced but again, this was a huge game and so, the runner, for whatever reason was not comfortable going. As a coach, I then support my runner. BTW, had Romero gone and been thrown out at the plate, there would have been posts asking what the heck she was thinking.

wait to go through.JPG

wait to go through 2.JPG

IF she is not breaking on contact which with 0 outs I don't think anyone is advocating for...So here she is waiting for the ball to go through.

The ball does not go through so her instinct is to hold.

go no go.JPG

Now SS takes two steps to 2B this is GO time but if she steps on 2B and guns home Romero is out

Pause the frame and snap it at the point you think she can go without risking being thrown out if SS throws home....the problem is we have hind sight we know she is trying to turn two Romero has gotta be thinking if that was me I would be coming home with the ball

I won't argue with the consensus, but as a coach, where can I look at myself and comprehend what I could do differently with younger girls so when they are on that stage the "consensus correct" decision is made.

I want to know what was said "before" the first pitch of the at bat by Hutchins, if anything. I think we all know the situation, 0 outs, top 7, down 1, runners on 1 and 3....... I know for a fact I would have said at a minimum....

0 outs, you are the tying run, we need YOUR run.
Freeze on a line drive, we cant get doubled up.
Make sure a hard shot gets thru the infield.

Now, knowing those 3 things were on my little old mind, how and the heck did Romero make the wrong choice????

I've heard that because her back is to 3rd base and went towards 2nd, which is when Romero paused, is when she should have broke. a 90' throw @ 60 mph is less than 2 seconds......

Are we saying that the 2nd baseman at the time who had Romero in her direct vision couldn't have simply said "home/4" to the SS who is running right at her? Romero was off maybe 8-10 feet...call it 10. I think she would have been thrown out by 2-3 steps had she made a run for it. In other words, Florida would NOT have continued with the DP attempt if Romero breaks. Just a thought, some discussion material.

With no one out I am surprised that Michigan did not have the batter take a pitch and have the 1B runner steal 2nd with no outs. If Florida throws to second they may get an out, but if the throw is offline or is into the runner, the 3B run scores standing up. If the runner is safe from that point forward you tell the 3rd base runner to go on any ground ball. Even if they throw the runner out at the plate Michigan would have had runners on 1st and 3rd again, so there is no reason not to go.

Romero needed to read that the ball was past the pitcher and the SS's back is turned towards her. You go. You do not wait for the ball to go into the outfield. Romero made a mistake.

Romero's problem was that she was flat-footed waiting for the ball to get through the infield.
