The umpiring this year is no different than prior years IMO. It's always suspect. I will say umpiring is a tough job. When you're talking major D1 softball, things happen very quickly. It's not easy and the umps are doing the best they can.

They either need to get better PUs or stop showing that imaginary strike box on the reply. One of them is way off.

I think it was the Tennessee game the PU called a strike 6’ above the top line. Then the batter swung at the next 2 pitches in about the same location to strike out. The batter did not stand a chance after that first bad call.

What is the over and under on the number of HBPs Florida gets today when their batter is in the strike zone?

WTF would you put Paul "Smokey" Edds, PAC 12 ump, in the UO/Bama game. He was the same one who took the HR from Udria because Hawkins stepped in fair territory. There were SEC match ups that he could have worked. Looked like he was going out of his way to not show bias towards the PAC. I am a biased fan but Ifeel he did a crappy job!!!

Smokey was at 1B today with Bubba behind the plate for Michigan vs LSU...laughable...and sad...

Umpiring is a tough job - that requires cracking the spine of the rule book and being in the right position to make the call...

I've seen so many "check swings" that were 3/4 swings not called it's a joke...along with the non-calls of illegal pitches and slappers making contact with the ball in fair territory...

Obviously the pre-series meetings didn't get the message across...or actually they probably did...

I for one refuse to believe that there aren't Umpires out there that can call this game. In fact, and I mentioned this before, on my dd's collegiate trip to Arizona, we saw some of the best umpiring I have ever seen. The same at the Arkansas Tournament. At the DI level, I know that there are hundreds of tremendous Umpires that are more than qualified to do those games.

BTW, I think that the K-Zone is a good thing and might be what forces umpires to actually call the zone. Would it be presumptuous of me to think that the NCAA is going to evaluate these umpires using the K-Zone?

During an after tourney discussion about strike zones, DD informed me the best umpire she ever caught in front of was an older woman that would explain the strike zone at the start of the game and then stick to it throughout.
