Coach and me have disagreement not going to say who is on what side, I am on the winning side. :)

2 outs, only runner is on 2nd. (My DD)

Ball is Hit to SS and she takes off to 3rd.

Should she have took off to 3rd?
Since it was hit to left side of field should she have held at 2nd until throw was made?

Depends. There is no hard and fast rule. If it was hit between 3rd base and the SS it is an easy play to get her at 3rd. If it is hit between the SS and 2nd base the SS is in an awkward posture to field the ball turn and throw to 3rd.

Back on the dirt...
Depends is a good answer because I assumed that the ball was hit to SS who could make a tag if she goes or was going to throw to 1b to get the 3rd out. Depends on if SS got the ball, if it was a gap hit etc etc.

My opinion.

If I am on defense I tell my players to ignore runner on 2nd, she does not matter throw to 1st for force out.

If runner on 2nd can force a play at 3rd or get in a rundown, we win. Might still be out but a lot more work for defense.

Even if it is hit to 3rd I want runner going but not to run into easy out.

It is a challenge to develop players on both offense and defense that can read this play as it develops and make the right decision. They get noticed in a college showcase when they show those skills.

For the most part with 2 outs I would run. I would rather have a SS try and throw over or around the runner with a tag rather than let her just have a simple play to first. The only thing I instruct is not to just run into an out (tag by SS or 3B). Even a rundown is preferable to a simple throw to first.

The benefit of running is that you are causing movement in the fielder and you can score on a bobble at first, etc.

with < 2 outs a different story

"It depends" is my choice, too. How fast is the runner? How hard is the ball hit? Does the SS have to move left or right for it? How good is the 3B? Can the runner slide?

The field is so small that it's possible, maybe even likely, that the SS is going to have the ball, waiting for the runner to get to her for an easy tag play.

very much depends on runner (speed and awareness) and where ball if hit. had a situation in game last week (10u rec), girl on second, ball hit to F5, very close to bag, runs right into tag. no effort to turn back, etc.
