What is your DD's warm up routine? Our pitching coach has been starting DD facing 3rd for 15 pitches and when we start this way it greatly improves accuracy
K drill, quick quick drill(feet together and pitching with just arms…working on arm speed), full movement pitches with progression to the mound. If she is struggling, the go back closer and repeat…
after a good overhand throwing warm up DD starts with walk throughs nice and easy pace. starts back, takes a few steps toward her catcher and then a nice slow arm circle/underhand throw. After about 20-25 of those she stands about 10 feet from her catcher with her feet shoulder width apart and at a 45-55 degree angle to the catcher and does faster arm circle throws (isolating upper body) about 20-30 of those.... Then she moves to a step/ leap toward catcher at 55 degrees/ ending with leg snap with even faster full arm circle throws. After she feels warmed up with that she moves to full pitching.
Never in her warm up does she start with her arm mid circle (start above her head). It emphasizes a hitch in the circle. Full arm circles only. Starting off nice and easy and building up to full speed.
Given overhand throwing is tougher on the shoulder than correct-mechanics light pitching, I've always scratched my head regarding the warm-up-throwing-overhand thing.
1. Relaxed underhand throwing. Not pitching, just playing catch underhand.
2. Show it - Throw it
3. Walkthroughs
4. Full pitches, with progression through spots and various pitches.
We don't do "x" number of reps. Its a warm up and she listens to what her body is telling her. Sometimes it takes 5 reps for her to feel good, sometimes it can take 30.
