Teen hit by baseball dies - Tri-State News, Weather & Sports

VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

A teen baseball player who was hit in the head by a ball during a game has passed away.

Officials said 14-year-old Colton Shaw was taken to Tallahassee Memorial hospital and listed in critical condition after the incident.

Valdosta High School Athletic Director said he passed a short time after 11:30 a.m. Thursday when he was taken off of life support.

Valdosta City Schools said the freak accident happened at a junior varsity game Wednesday night in Moultrie.

Superintendent E. Martin Roesch and head baseball coach Bart Shuman traveled to the hospital to be with Colton's family Thursday morning.

Shaw, a freshman at Valdosta High School, was listed as a member of the school's junior varsity Wildcats.

Support for the student poured out as word of his condition spread.

On social media, friends shared images that said "Today, we're all Cats" as a sign of support for Shaw.

Valdosta High School offered extra grief counselors for students on Thursday. The Middle School, where Shaw's sister attends, also offered extra counselors.

Valdosta City Schools Public Relations Jennifer Steedley says the vigil planned for tonight at 9pm at the Valdosta High Track for Colton Shaw has been canceled. A similar event will be scheduled at a later date.

Meanwhile, school administrators said they have been overwhelmed with support and prayers.

"I don't think anybody plans to go to a baseball game and come home without one of their teammates," said Jennifer Steedley with Valdosta City Schools. "Our entire community has been very supportive."

Grief counselors will meet with Valdosta High School team members instead of having practice. All Valdosta High School baseball games have been canceled for the rest of the week.

A decision on future game schedules will be made at a later date. There was no immediate word on funeral arrangements.

No way! How awful. Kenzie Fowler was hit by a foul ball as she walked in the dugout. Screens were soon installed.

My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone involved.

Tragic for everyone involved. It will take some time to recover from that as a team. My sympathy to the family.
