My DD sprained her left wrist (glove hand) in PE the other day.... Saw the Dr since it swelled up right away - it is a slight sprain & he wants it wrapped for 2 weeks for support. She is in both basketball & softball, so little time for rest & healing! She slid into home yesterday & tweeked it on the slide somehow & the pain just shot up her arm.

Is there any other advice to help with more support, quicker healing, etc? We are wrapping it (Dr taught me how) before every practice & game - but obviously still painful!

Thanks!

Does the doctor know that it hurts he when she plays?

She very well could have made the injury worse when she slid and I would take in again to have it re-looked at. Quickest way to heal it is to rest it. Quickest way to reinjure it is to not rest it enough.

She injured it Friday in School, the double header that she slid in was Sunday - Doctor took off for Cancun on Saturday.... But when he wrapped it Friday night before her practice for us (and to show me how) as he wrapped it & after he pushed & such on it & she told him it hurt. His response was - it will, but this will protect it more!

I guess we will see how basketball goes & go from there. I just thought being wrapped for support she couldn't injure it worse???

Thanks, will keep an eye on it!

Sometimes you get better advice here, than you get from a doctor. :) So for what it is worth, if it has to be wrapped and is a new injury, sit her out.

Good luck. I would have played, if I would have had to take a crutch out there.

Um, if it hurts sliding, which doesn't really involve the hands/wrists, I'm sure basketball won't hurt it at all... Is it really that important to you that she plays even though she is injured?

Definitely watch for swelling. Not sure if you saw a general practice or specialist, but if it still hurts I would take her to an orthopedic surgeon. In 2011 dw broke her ankle, dd #1 tagged a girl out at home, dove into the sliding girl (bad throw) stood up throwing arm hangin (broke wrist and several small hand bones), dw broke ankle in a triathlon, dd#2 broke 2 fingers in a soccer game, and the most extreme ds broke through both bones in his forearm falling off the playground. Ds's forearm was in an S shape, 14 weeks in a cast.

So I consider myself an at home expert on fractures, and almost every one of our trips to the ortho, they had bad things to say about the e.r. Doctors and their lack of knowledge in bone injuries.

See another doctor- it sounds like she may have injured it further, and in the worst case you'll have a second opinion. An ortho is your best bet. If you can find one who understands sport injuries and athletes' desires to play long term in the future, better.
You can drag a sprain on for months and months. Let it heal.
BTW- I give all of this advice from personal experience- 2nd opinions, sprain lasting months, and all.

This makes it sound like I am this mean mom "making" her play... she WANTS to play. And no, its not THAT important to me... YES I enjoy nothing more then to watch her play, but not at the expense of hurting herself worse.

I have to allow her (at age 12) to tell me when the pain it too much, or is it just one of those nagging things that she can play though.

And I think that it was more of a quick slide, get up fast & excited that I scored type of thing & she used that wrist to get up fast & bent it back too much. Not the actual slide that hurt (she does know how to slide & yes you do not use your wrist to slide, I understand that)

I simply thought that I can not be the only one that has dealt with a sprain on a child & thought that maybe someone had some advice on how to help her work through it. Heck back in my day I played with sprains all the time... I can't remember playing basketball or softball without something hurting! lol

Thanks for all the replies & advice :)
