Dropping bat backward as you bunt...legal?

We were at a clinic where a bunt was taught different than I have seen before. The instructor said it was from japan and was legal.

Basically it was normal bunt but the batter releases the bat on contact (moving slightly backward), and the bat drops down and back, right handed batter runs more forward for step to allow bat to drop into catcher. Its not throwing the bat, and it must be a distraction to catcher. Is this legal?

Seems like it would be a great play on a steal instead of taking pitch?

We have a girl on our team that does this. She releases the bat right at contact, I've never seen the bat go back at the catcher though. She's never been called for it.
