saw this yesterday 14b they really had a hard time adjusting. fastball was 45ish change was 37 . we moved them up in the box because the arc wasn't to high. took 4 innings to adjust , but then they started killing it. they went to their #2 who threw slowwwwwwer ,but they were on it when. scored 10 to end it.

Don't move up in the box for slow pitchers. Move them BACK in the box. This forces the slower pitchers to throw a little harder and flatter. If you move up in the box for a slow pitcher, the ball is arching so much that the top of the strike zone is going to be at the batters nose, crossing the plate chest high for a strike. Moving them up is rec ball coaching.

It's the ARC of the pitch that throws off batters, not the speed.

At one of our middle school games this year, the team was really struggling against a slow pitcher ( all weak pop-ups and dribblers back to the pitcher). One of the Dad's called out to the coach, saying "Put the rec girls in, they can hit her!" ( meaning the subs, most of whom don't play travel, DD included)

It drew a pretty good laugh in the bleachers, but that's just what the coach did. Turned out it was a pretty good idea, as it worked and we came from behind and won the game handily. Probably the only time the parents of the stronger players didn't get upset when their DD's were pulled :)

HA! This happened to my DD just yesterday. She pitches for a 12U team and we were scrimmadging (sp?) a 14U team. Their coach kept yelling "slow your horses, wait and wait, she's really slow" blah blah. They had a parent clocking, she was throwing 49 consistantly, which may be slow for 14U, she seems to do well in most games we play. This parent clocked their own teams pitchers and both were 52, not much faster then mine I'd say.

We won 6-3. Their coach was ripping them up for losing to a 12U team, even if it was just a scrimmadge. :)

Not to side track but 3 MPH is a lot, it doesn't sound it, but its 6% slower. At 50ish at 14u its about where the pitch is. outside on the black is just as hard to hit at 49 as 52
