Looking for some ideas on competetive softball drills for when the "typical" stuff starts to get dry...or just to break up a practice with something "Fun". I'll start with one our girls love (12U)... we call it "Guts"
Team split into 2 groups. Set up 6 cones..... 4 on the outside perimiter of what you define as the "playing field" and then a set that marks the middle. Think of it as ping pong... the 4 corners are the 4 corners of the table.. the ones in the middle represent the "net". one person from each team starts with a ball. on coaches GO...the 2 players holding the ball throw it to the other team......but must bounce it BEFORE the mid line defined by the cones. The object is to field it cleanly with proper fielding mechanics. If you field it clean...you stay... if you don't...YOU'RE OUT. If you bounce it beyomd the midline.. YOU'RE OUT. If you bounce it and it goes outside the other teams boundary cones.. YOU'RE OUT Start with a playing field wide enough to accomodate half your team (approx 6). As girls are eliminated.. it gets harder and harder for the remaining players to cover the field. Remeber, the ball must be thrown so it would be on a line that would pass between the 2 cones marking the other teams boundary. Each throw back and forth is on the coaches GO. A nice twist is to go a round or 2 with foam balls to encourage soft hands and 2 hands fielding or that ball WILL bounce out of the glove!! It won't take long for the girls to figure out it's best to throw the ball to the other team as if yo were skipping a rock across a pond to make it a challenge to field clean.
