There's always nuances to the rules that you've never seen. Runner on first, ground ball hit to the 2nd baseman. Runner is going to go in front of the fielder to avoid contact. The ball pops out of the fielder's glove in front of her, she takes a step and reaches for the ball when the runner makes contact. Ump calls interference, but I'm thinking that the fielder was only interfered with after the ball popped out of her glove and she reached for it, she was able to field it without any contact. What's the correct call?

Some rule sets have a "step and reach" clause in the interference rule. The fielder making the original play is still protected if she is within a step and reach of the ball.

USSSA Rule 8, Section 18, Note 5...

"If a batted ball is misplayed but the fielder in still making an initial play and the runner contacts the fielder, this is interference. If the misplayed ball bounds away so that it is no longer within a step and a reach (in any direction) and contact then occurs as the fielder and runner collide, this is obstruction."
