I was wondering if anyone has had good experiences with some of the less expensive radar guns on the market today, I think my old jugs gun is finally dead.

I have a Bushnell and it always reads slow, about two mph compared to the Jugs. At tryouts last week it seemed even slower. I had my DD as a reference and some of the pitchers were easily 5 mph above the read. BTW, I was set up directly behind the catcher so there wasnt any cosine effect.

I have a pocket radar, like it, and like the size. We use it a couple times a week. I have never used any other radar so have nothing to compare it to. Some times it fails to read for what ever reason (probably user error). The device only reads in whole numbers so fractions do not display. The cost new was $199.

In terms of location, what would the effect be if you took the reading from behind the pitcher? Would that give an accurate reading?

I am always sitting on the bucket so have never tried from behind the pitcher. The user's guide shows you can take it from either behind or in front (readings from the side are less accurate). I'll give it a try from behind this weekend and report back to you.

The accuracy from behind the pitcher is the same as from behind the catcher. If you want to know more about the principles of radar, google "time domain reflectometry".

Radar is linear. I also have a pocket radar, the whole # is always within 1 mph of
a brand new jugs that we have. I like it because the pocket radar is not obtrusive

I have the Bushnell (got it as a gift). It seems to work fine to me, but whenever a parent asks to try it out on their DD they always complain about how it is way way slow. (Go figure). That being said, my DD is throwing around 42 on it and 42 seems pretty darn fast.
