I have heard of PC's using a stretchable exercise strap that connects to the pitchers ankles that help the back leg pull up quicker. Has anyone tried this before or is it a bad idea .

Hmmm... Not sure I'd use something like that. I think a strong, but appropriate length stride should result in a decent drag.

Ken,

She has been doing good the last couple of days staying vertical and her drag has been staying much closer to the power line so hopefully she can keep this going with enough repetition. She is throwing pretty hard not leaning but I worry when we get in games she will revert and try to power the ball. We'll see. Thanks for the advice.

Not a terrible idea...

This would be a great boost to the hip flexors... when used as a means of getting the drive leg stacked. Although I don't do it in live pitching... I definitely recommend using bands to strengthen the flexors/extensors in a workout.

Adding resistance in an open-chain movement like this should be moderated. Very deliberate movements, with specific resistance applied that is appropriate.

It's not quite the same thing as harnessing a kid to increase her lean/drive/explosion off the plate... as that's a closed chain.

Java, Do you have any advise/drill on helping DD bring up the back leg during the drive out better?

I am uploading another slow motion video of DD taken tonight. She is getting her back leg pulled up quicker and she isn't leaning near as much but is still missing the brush on most pitches. Can anyone tell me if she looks like she is not opening up her shoulders enough? Maybe her glove is swimming to hard. I compared it to Amanda Scarborough and Jennie Finch and her body was close but it doesn't look like her shoulder are opening enough. She is throwing almost everything high or high and left. Any other opinions would be appreciated. Thanks

Personally, I think she could use more whip action in her arm. Even though there is slight bend to the arm going into release, she seems to keep that same bend through release. I my mind, she needs to let that arm be a bit more whippy, maybe even some of that brush-assisted whip.

Couple things...

Get her hand on top of the ball by three o'clock.
She's throwing around her body, not across.
She's releasing off the front leg, not the rear, missing the whip. The elbow is coming into her midline. Get her elbow back a hair and tell her to focus on sucking the energy our of the upper arm, by accelerating the lower arm as she approaches the bottom of the circle.

Watch John's reciprocal adduction video (Boardmember).
You might experiment with the length of her drive a hair when adjusting her release point (shorten it a hair). Pitching across her body (lessening the rotation into release) will help, too.
Have her aim at taking your shoelaces off for awhile... burn some worms while pitching across the body.

I don't see the swim being an issue. Tell her to try pitching without moving the left arm - and compare that video to this one. I think you'll see that she's bringing the right shoulder forward more than pulling the left back. Once that's out of both your minds, have her visualize the release motion as one of a jumping jack... with all limbs pulling into the body... as opposed to around it... more on that in BM's adduction video.

She has talent, just needs to associate power with pulling down into the torso, rather than 'pushing' forward with the torso.
