What if you had a player that wanted to pitch for her 8th grade team. She has pitched some before but not a lot. She is trying to get ready in a month! What do you tell her? Forget it and just work on getting her ready for the next season? What could I do to help her? Any ideas? Thanks guys!!!!

Hard to give good advice without a video or more information. I will say this, DD's pitching coach was in a bad mood this week. I asked him what was wrong. He said, "I've got 5 different sets of parents who just contacted me about getting theirs kids "ready" for the season".
He said that it's hard to get a kid ready who has not pitched all fall and winter.
I think it depends on a few things:

* What's your DD's current skill set. Can she pitch at the level you think she will be playing at?

* What is her willingness to put in the work?

* Does she have confidence? Can she brush off the struggles and move forward with good coaching?

If she is able to learn quickly and has the "tools" then why not?

Good Luck!

I have never seen her pitch so I do not know where she is at. She is a fairly decent athlete. I am going to video her so that I can have a reference. I am not sure if we can even get her close to get ready to pitch. I am going to have a meeting with her and her mom to see where she is at and then determine what we can do.

Thanks for your input!

This happens to me a lot. Suzie wants to make the HS team. And then, they name a nationally ranked HS, that families are even moving in here, to play for. Of course, it rarely works out. The girl has no idea at all, what it takes to make some of the local HS teams and really pretty much dismisses me when I start talking about working 7 days a week.

If they are borderline, it can be done. But, I have only seen that happen, once.

Thanks for responding Amy. Can I ship her to you? LOL! I will let you know how it works out.

DD's team graduated their D1 pitcher last year. The JV pitcher from last year is in the low 40's. DD hasn't been in the circle in almost 3 years but a couple of months ago threw 52-54. She has talked about seeing what she can do but I'm quasi opposed. That is a lot of lessons and time to devote just for HS ball. I'm hoping the JV pitcher has gotten a lot better over the winter.

As long as she doesn't put a lot of pressure on herself, it could be fun. Great opportunity!

I would tell her that I don't know if she will be ready in a month but lets see what happens and then just get started. You never know until you try. There are no shortcuts, but if you can get her practicing for a month she should see enough improvement to realize that maybe in another month she will be ready, and so on and so on. SO maybe she doesn't end up as a good 8th grade pitcher, but instead becomes a good 9th grade pitcher for the JV team.

What is the pitching situation for the 8th grade team - are there good pitchers already or do they need some player(s) to step up? If it's to fill a need, the month isn't the end-all.

What do I tell her?
- Do core work every day. - Run a 1/2 mile every day - Make certain that your grades are very good (i have one now, that is almost ineligible.) - Practice even if it just throwing a ball against a wall

Be prompt. Be early. Have everything with you, that you will need.

Avoid gossip. Avoid the complainers. Tell your folks not to sit with the complainers. Do not huddle up and complain about the cold, the rain, the heat, etc.

Smile. Call girls by their name. Help carry equipment. Avoid social media and do not even reply, if others start to cause problems.

And congratulate, even the girl at your position.
