A lot of people have asked whether or not Gorilla Gold Grip Enhancer is legal in high school. In January, GG was approved for both softball and baseball pitchers.

“We have determined that this product meets the specification in the rules,“ Theresia Wynns, Director of Sports and Officials Education for NFHS said. “The GG towel may be kept in the pocket. The pitching hand needs to be wiped off before taking the ball from the glove,” she added.

The NFHS does not endorse Gorilla Gold, but would attest to the approval of a pitcher using the product.

The approval aligns the organization with the majority of softball governing bodies including the NCAA, the American Softball Association (ASA), the International Softball Federation (ISF), as well as others.

Thanks!!

Do you have a link for that? When I googled the money quote in your post (to show a protesting coach or ump), all that turned up was your post.

I'm not sure what a money quote is. Here's the actual press release:

NFHS APPROVES GORILLA GOLD FOR
BASEBALL AND SOFTBALL PITCHERS
Resin-based grip enhancer can be kept in pocket

Lewiston, Idaho (January 26, 2014) The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) has included Gorilla Gold Grip Enhancer, the world’s leading producer and marketer of resin-tackified grip towels, as an approved drying agent that can be kept in a pitcher’s pocket.

The approval aligns the organization with the majority of softball governing bodies including the NCAA, the American Softball Association (ASA), the International Softball Federation (ISF), as well as others. The NFHS has also approved Gorilla Gold for use by baseball pitchers.

“We have determined that this product meets the specification in the rules,“ Theresia Wynns, Director of Sports and Officials Education for NFHS said. “The GG towel may be kept in the pocket. The pitching hand needs to be wiped off before taking the ball from the glove,” she added.

In the current ruling, pitchers cannot have residue on the ball. Like rosin, Gorilla Gold does not affect the ball, only the fingers or hands to which the drying agent is first applied.

According to Wynns, “The NFHS does not endorse Gorilla Gold, but would attest to the approval of a pitcher using the product.”

About Gorilla Gold

Each Gorilla Gold towel is impregnated with a light resin formula that can improve feel and control, and is especially effective in wet or cold conditions. In addition to softball and baseball, Gorilla Gold is used in nearly every sport where a good grip is required including golf, soccer (goalkeepers), racquet sports, rugby, cricket, track and field, and football.

Hillhouse carries this in his online store. DD loves it and has used it in ASA stuff for 2 years. She swears by it and says her ball spin, especially riseball really benefits from this.

I also bought one from Hillhouse, but DD hasn't used it yet. I wanted to be able to cite the rule (ASA in particular) if need be.

From June 2009 ASA rules clarifications.

Rule 6 Fast Pitch: There have been a few questions in regards to the new rule in Fast Pitch regarding the use of the Gorilla Gold product recently approved by the ASA Council. The question is, “Can the Gorilla Gold product be left on the ground if the pitcher does not have a pocket to put it in?” The new rule is clear according to Rule 6 (Fast Pitch) Section 6 ….an approved drying agent may be used by the pitcher that is included in the list published by the ASA. The resin must be left on the ground and the approved drying agent in the pitcher pocket.” If there is no pocket the drying agent cannot be left on the ground and must be left in the dugout.

On the bucket
I keep the ASA printed release in my bag since DD uses GG when it is wet or cold. Never needed it (yet), but I'm sure I will one day.

Anyone want to bet the first day I forget it will be the day I need it?
