I'm not sure what a money quote is. Here's the actual press release:

NFHS APPROVES GORILLA GOLD FOR
BASEBALL AND SOFTBALL PITCHERS
Resin-based grip enhancer can be kept in pocket

Lewiston, Idaho (January 26, 2014) The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) has included Gorilla Gold Grip Enhancer, the world’s leading producer and marketer of resin-tackified grip towels, as an approved drying agent that can be kept in a pitcher’s pocket.

The approval aligns the organization with the majority of softball governing bodies including the NCAA, the American Softball Association (ASA), the International Softball Federation (ISF), as well as others. The NFHS has also approved Gorilla Gold for use by baseball pitchers.

“We have determined that this product meets the specification in the rules,“ Theresia Wynns, Director of Sports and Officials Education for NFHS said. “The GG towel may be kept in the pocket. The pitching hand needs to be wiped off before taking the ball from the glove,” she added.

In the current ruling, pitchers cannot have residue on the ball. Like rosin, Gorilla Gold does not affect the ball, only the fingers or hands to which the drying agent is first applied.

According to Wynns, “The NFHS does not endorse Gorilla Gold, but would attest to the approval of a pitcher using the product.”

About Gorilla Gold

Each Gorilla Gold towel is impregnated with a light resin formula that can improve feel and control, and is especially effective in wet or cold conditions. In addition to softball and baseball, Gorilla Gold is used in nearly every sport where a good grip is required including golf, soccer (goalkeepers), racquet sports, rugby, cricket, track and field, and football.

My daughter plays in USFA(United States Fastpitch Association) and their rulebook is the NFHS rulebook, so this helps. But last fall when very cold, I mentioned to the umps prior to the game in two tournaments that my DD was going to use Gorilla Gold and they looked at my like i was crazy and was pulling something over on them. The other coaches on our team thought I was shady for trying. The umps werent very educated on the rule, and one even threatened to disqualify us. The press release from Gorilla Gold is good, but I don't see most of these old school umps buying into the concept without some reference in rule book or at least a letter or press release from NFHS. My DD likes the product and would like to use in the future. Im planning on using for my tennis game this summer when hot. So when they say money letter, I guess they mean something that validates that its legal. I wouldnt have confidence is showing the Gorrilla Gold press release. I also wish this was communicated to umpire associations.

The poster claims this to be an NFHS press release, however, there is no such press release shown on the NFHS website.

Do you allow it when you work? For some/all associations?

I have never had a pitcher use Gorilla Gold. It is legal under ASA so yes I would allow it under ASA. Im not positive about FED, I have heard rumors before it is approved but have never seen it in actual writing.

Interesting, I've had umpires allow it/say its approved in NCAA, ASA, USSSA, and Pony. Its not uncommon here in the NE when spring/fall ball often is played cold and wet. The "junk ballers" particularly seem to like it to help w/ spin even when its hot and dry.

Just curious if anybody has anybody had success letting an umpire to use Gorilla Gold this Spring.? I asked a high school umpire last night before a game played under NFHS rules, and he never heard of it and said it would be illegal to have anything in their back pocket. This is about the 4th umpire I asked this year, and none have said it was legal. If it is legal, word is not getting around.

Here is a copy of the email I received from NFHS when I inquired. If you would like to print it out you can show it to umpires. By the way, this was an inquiry about the supposed press release by NFHS approving GG. As you can see, while it is approved, there is no such press release as has been purported.

The NFHS is not in the business of making endorsements for products; thus you will not find a press release from NHFS on a drying agent. Gorilla Gold is similar to other drying agents and should be treated as such. This means it may be used and may be kept in the pocket or on the mound for NFHS games.

Odd that NFHS wouldn't provide an official statement or at least written guidance to the major SB/umpire associations clarifying whether its use was allowed or not. I don't see that being an endorsement.

IMO the Gorilla Gold is more like a tack rag (used for removing sawdust prior to finishing wood) than a rosin bag, which I would consider a typical "drying agent". So, without an official NFHS position, I wouldn't allow it if I were an umpire.
