So I am pulling this thread into its own thread title as I am wondering if the old thread was not being seen or maybe this might be a taboo topic these days...?

Bottom line is that I think my DD's PC has been teaching mostly hello-elbow and want to make sure I understand IR all the way before I go after it with her and my DD.

Anyways, here was my previous post copied here:

So this IR topic has finally sucked me in. I have been ignoring the concept to date because it didn't absorb into my thick head immediately (in true American form...)

Please be patient with this IR noob but if a pitcher is throwing a screwball does that mean automatically it does not include IR? Or is IR just a natural finish without the exaggerated hello-elbow?

The screwball would be considered ER(external rotation) or supination as opposed to pronation. Hope this helps.

Hold a ball at the 3 o'clock position (12 o'clock is above your head, 3 o'clock is behind you) with the palm up (ball facing the sky). Simply let your arm drop as if you were pitching (no pushing of the arm, just let your arm fall all by itself). Your hand should finish in front of you, your palm should be facing the ground or close to it.

Notice your elbow did not pop up to face the batter; your hand does not finish up high as if you were bowling.

It's more involved than that, but that's how I would explain it to someone trying to understand the difference. It's the natural movement of the arm, you are pulling down instead of pushing through.

Once you see a high level pitcher pitching that way the light bulb will come on.

Ahhh - OK - I think I get it.

The contrast in hello elbow is the "unnatural" forcing of the elbow to point at the catcher.

Thanks!!

Short answer is 'no'. A natural IR fastball spin isn't a true dropball spin like with hello elbow. It is actually similar to a screwball, but no 'turning the doorknob' is needed. Look at the og thread regarding the axis with the gear. Cheers.

Could you explain this more. If you can't get "true dropball" spin with IR, how can you throw a dropball with IR?
Thanks

You can get any spin you want with IR. If you want to throw a dropball release it sooner (and spin off the fingers). No need to do anything else (stride short, pull up on the ball, etc.)

Sorry GunnerShotgun, this is the reply I was talking about, the Post from Vdubya. So, you are saying that IR doesn't put screw spin in the fastball naturally?
