the post regarding stride distance has me asking what the coaches feel is the "best" width for a stance? I have seen in the past one poster had a formula where he states shoulder width plus half or something along those lines. I know a lot depends on the individual. I don't like the idea of a big stride

Before addressing the ideal 'stance' width, it helps to first address the ideal width at 'launch'.

There was a study that I read that stated that at 'launch' the average MLB hitter's big toe-to-toe spacing was 70% of their height ... both 'height' and 'width' measured at 'launch'. The majority fell within a spread of +/-10% ... having a width/height ratio of 60% to 80% ... but some fell outside of that range.

Most people will have a width/height ratio where they feel most powerful in their launch position.

If you move them back in their 'stance', then they will tend to stride further to realize their desired width/height ratio at launch.

Here is an example ....

Very interesting post, since coaches are always telling my DD her stance is too wide, but she is 5'8" tall. The common answer is no wider than shoulder width?? Also, FFS can you post the link to the study you referred to regarding width at launch?

thanks

I have said before, and it was brought to my attention by LSU, that women, with a wider pelvis, with a tilted pelvis, need to be wide with little stride, or be wide after stride. Look through model swings, look at hitters from Florida, Lsu, Alabama, etc. This is one thing I have said that women/girls need to compare with women, not men.

DD's coach told her to stand outside the box, and then jump high and land in the box. Her feet should land at a good balance point. He said to tweak it from there. It was/is wider than shoulder width.

RHC ... while we can't post video clips of Bustos here, I've done a similar analysis of her swing as well.

In Busto's stance her Width/Height ratio is 34%. At launch her Width/Height ratio is 72% ... which is close to the norm for MLB hitters.

This is how I have always viewed it.

After the stride, the distance between the back foot and front foot will be about the distance of a players inseam. After the stride, the left leg, right leg and ground will form an equilateral triangle.

The stance really determines how much of a stride they will take. If they start out the distance of their inseam, it will basically be a no stride. The closer their feet in the stance, the longer the stride. Jumping in the box is not a bad idea, to get the girls in athletic postion.
