    Double Base question

Failure to tag up on a caught fly ball in foul territory, and a situation where the ball is fair before it rolls past the bag and then goes foul, to be picked up by a player who then steps on the orange bag? I've seen arguments to the effect that those situations are not technically a "force"...

Question about a tie in pool play

In a similar vein, I encountered something this weekend I hadn't seen before. The weather was unseasonably rainy/foggy, and the Saturday games were under a hour and a half start delay. To get everything back on track, they shortened the games to 50 minutes drop-dead, which we've encountered...

    Japanese hitting blog-Tsukaguchi

There's also an "interesting" analysis of the hitting mechanics of black players vs. white players

    Opinions on Bat Usage

Thanks for the suggestion, I might give that a try! I also tried putting some Formula 409 on washcloth and spot-applying it just to the inked area, but it didn't even dim or smudge the ink at all. At this point, I may also just suck it up and live with it.

    Batting lineup philosophy

Nope, that's how it stands thus far :) Small sample size, currently; only 9 games so far this season. I'm sure there will be some more separation into something more normal looking as the season progresses. It is a good hitting team all the way down so far, though.

    Opinions on Bat Usage

Why wouldn't the manufacture date be relevant? So far, the other reports of Mako cracking that I've seen are overwhelmingly reporting the 10/13 batch. Perhaps there was a higher volume of bats produced in that batch and therefore more bats are being reported from it, or perhaps there really is...

    Batting lineup philosophy

My DD is a prime example of this right now...her overall average is right at .340, which is in the bottom four or so of the 14-player team (16U). However, she bats in the third spot, and leads the team in hits with runners on base. There's something about having ducks on the pond that brings...

    Opinions on Bat Usage

Similar to what jwalk said, I let my daughter put around 200 hits on her Mako (10/13 manufacture date) right of the wrapper. After that, she got to put 20 hits per week on it with hard balls during the dedicated batting practice, and as many wiffle/softee hits as she wanted. We've played two...

    Scorekeeping issues:

I'm a bit new to scorekeeping, so I'll just document what I would have scored at my current level of knowledge, and hopefully learn something useful! 1. Sacrifice Bunt (I don't think there is a fielder's choice option in this situation; the batter would have been out if the pitcher had made the...

    Softball bats and airplanes

I think you've gotten the answer to your specific question, but I wanted to point out another option: throw a layer of bubble wrap on it, put it in a box, ship it to the hotel you will be staying at, and ship it back home afterwards. I've done this in the past for out-of-state tournaments. I...

Louisville Independence Day Tournament - Boulder, CO

Wow, that's interesting. I suppose that is helpful for a lot of teams. I know there have been times I would have gladly paid a premium to have somebody else handle booking accommodations, but generally I would prefer to do my own legwork and this would greatly annoy me.

Louisville Independence Day Tournament - Boulder, CO

For Boulder or Louisville games, either Longmont or Broomfield/Westminster hotels are a good alternative. There are several "major side-road" routes to get into Boulder from either location with a 30 minute drive without having to fight the rush-hour traffic on the turnpike, if your games...

    2014 Easton Mako

Some of this I've previously mentioned in another post, but this one reflects some actual batting practice and scrimmage activity. My daughter took one for a test swing a couple of weeks ago. She had previously been using a 32" 2013 FS1, and the 32" Mako swung lighter, so we moved her up to a...

looking for a new bat - recommendations?

We had a 20% team discount event at Dick's Sporting Goods last weekend, so we let my daughter pick out a new bat for the upcoming season. She is 15, 5'2"/105lbs, but extremely strong for her size. Last year she used an Easton FS1 (32" -10). She swung the new Xeno and an Easton Mako. She...

    easton pop up catch net

I had the exact same problem with an Easton pop-up net. There's no real cure once the spring steel gets twisted the wrong direction, it's like trying to fix a mutilated Slinky...even if you get everything wound back the right way, it will never look/work quite right again. I ended up buying a...

    Which Evoshield?

My DD's team last season wore the Racerback chest and back guard as required equipment. A few of them did take pitches off of the back guards, for what it's worth. From a wearability standpoint, they are so light that I don't think any of the girls really noticed the extra pads and they really...

Worn out cleats and how lucky we are.

I think the sentiment of wanting to help is great, but be careful of jumping to any conclusions. About three quarters of the way through this season, I noticed that the primary pitcher for my DD's team had cleats in much the same shape. The big toe and next toe over on her drag foot were...

    Team Cost for the year

Last year we paid around $1750, for 12 tournaments. This year, we are in a different organization and they want $1150 for 14 tournaments. From what I can tell, the $1750 was right about average compared to all of the other teams in our area, the $1150 for this year is really low. I suspect...

    Another year, another team <sigh>

That's interesting...did the coach say how many players short he/she was? Where I'm at (Colorado), it is way too early to give up on forming a team if you are short even 3-4 players at this point. Even if you are short when October rolls around by one, maybe two, you could reasonably expect to...

Another Dad looking for swing analysis and some hitting advice

I went and checked out that site, and one of the main principles they espouse (generating torque by pivoting the hands) is something I had seen elsewhere as well and have been trying to incorporate into her swing this week. It's a bit tough since we are in the middle of an all-week tournament...
