Thank you to whoever posted the Giambi gif from the 2008 Yankees... that was helpful because it was broken down into the specific actions of the hands and forearms etc. This thread was getting hard to find useful info through the thick fog of arrogance. Its ok to have a difference of opinion ya know! I think its called agreeing to disagree :)

Oh, I totally agree. The guy swinging the bat is horrible (He's some chop they grabbed for the video) and MLB hitters do keep their hands back longer.....they spin from the bottom-up, but when their arms do release they release with unbelievable power and speed. Their front arm pulls hard, their back elbow slots hard and fast (pushing on the handle to get the barrel on plane), and while the front arm is still pulling hard the back arm provides a short but hard push on the handle (what people here call the whip or push-pull), then the finish is indeed a pull through and beyond extension with the front arm. That is the anatomy and kinesiology of the launch and IMO is indisputable.

All forces of the swing are additive if you swing from the bottom-up. I think we can all agree with that.

Closest actual MLB swing to the video guy?

No doubt....Bonds is one heck of a hitter. All I am saying is he cannot put correctly into words what he actually does. He says he swings down on the ball but he clearly did not. That's all I'm saying and trust me, I do not "struggle".

Only if you knew why he says he swings down. Did you try what I asked you to try with regards to the Ryan Braun clip?

One last time and then I think I am out. If people are allowed to flat out lie on this site and the posts that prove they are lying are deleted. What is the point? I have changed my views over my life time of instructing. We all have but I don't lie about it as it pertains to a certain player. Funny thing is, I am back where I started and with a lot more confidence.

Here is my last try at explaining why the Pros say they swing down and why they practice swinging down. If you practice swinging the way the pro looks like in a game swing. You will create a long loopy swing. Hitting, no matter how hard you try to make it about physics, it will not be and cannot be about physics. Swinging is about physics, Hitting is about feel. High Level hitters understand the feel. That is why they practice the way they practice. They understand the shortest distance to the ball is a straight line with the barrel. They understand that if they get under the ball they will get out. They understand that they need to be short, quick and generate bat speed.

So, they practice as straight lines as possible in practice. Even in front toss and BP. They are trying like crazy to over exaggerate these straight lines. Trying like crazy to be as direct to the ball as possible. Knowing that in a game, and at game speeds the body will do what it needs to do. They will breakdown from what they practice.

If they practice to match their game swing then they will be screwed in the box on game day. They will get long, they will get way under the ball.

That is why I say slow motion video is bad. Teach kids the way the MLB players practice. Create drills that give the feel of what is happening. Don't literally tell them to swing with an uppercut. Teach them to stay short and quick with the barrel. Attack down to the ball with the barrel.

Peace, I'm out!

ok Hype, now i know you do not abibe by the Hanson principle. Can please post some full speed mlb training videos? All this time i wanted to believe in what i see. Now i should teach what they Say, because that is the ultimite truth?
SWING DOWN CHOP WOOD TOMOHOCK THROW THE BARREL INTO THE GROUND HIT THE BOTTOM HALF OF THE BALL

AM I in the twilight zone?? Ok HYPE if you produce some high level hitters practicing these things, you will have helped thousands of young ladies who are now doing it wrong.

I have heard of the Hanson principle. I have no idea why we call it that. I believe Mark Hanson once said compare everything to video of the best. I have no problem with that at all. I 100% believe you should compare to the best. Why would not want to?

Believe what you see. That is fine but also believe what created what you see.

Never heard a pro say throw the barrel into the ground or a lot of the things you are saying. I guess unless you have tried these cues and have an understanding of what it is like to have some athleticism and to have been in the box, these cues and thoughts make no sense to you.

It is about being short to the ball. It is about staying on top. Keeping the hands above the ball. It is about being direct.

I have no idea if you are in the twilight zone or not. Do you hear Rod Serling? I have only worked with a few girls as it pertains to hitting. I primarily work with young men from 8 to 51.

Here is a few videos for you. I know his mechanics look different then they do in his game swings. There is a reason he is doing what he does.

Hey ... I feel semi-insulted. Last week it took me 20-min to fix a 'bat drag' issue with a player.

Gosh darn it ... I need to get better at this.

I guess i must be saying the words wrong to my dd. i been showing and telling her to turn the barrel all week and maybe got a couple of swings close just yesterday. 10 or 20 minutes to fix a swing path that has been ingrained in muscle memory for the last 3 years? That would be nice.

Hyp/Lenski,
I think I have a perfect example. Derek Jeter. If u look at his pre-at bat swings, he is always swinging somewhat down like an axe at a tree. Then when hes in the box, his swing is totally different. Hes perfected that inside out swing of his. As Sterling will say over the radio "that Jeterian Swing". He doesnt always do this, it depends on the pitch. Problem is when young kids/overzealous fathers see this, they try to take that pre at bat swing to the actual at bat. Leads to short time barrel in hitting zone. If they have great hand/eye coordination and lousy pitching they will do fine. Till later when facing better pitching they will struggle.
