Looking for some ideas on competetive softball drills for when the "typical" stuff starts to get dry...or just to break up a practice with something "Fun". I'll start with one our girls love (12U)... we call it "Guts"

Team split into 2 groups. Set up 6 cones..... 4 on the outside perimiter of what you define as the "playing field" and then a set that marks the middle. Think of it as ping pong... the 4 corners are the 4 corners of the table.. the ones in the middle represent the "net". one person from each team starts with a ball. on coaches GO...the 2 players holding the ball throw it to the other team......but must bounce it BEFORE the mid line defined by the cones. The object is to field it cleanly with proper fielding mechanics. If you field it clean...you stay... if you don't...YOU'RE OUT. If you bounce it beyomd the midline.. YOU'RE OUT. If you bounce it and it goes outside the other teams boundary cones.. YOU'RE OUT Start with a playing field wide enough to accomodate half your team (approx 6). As girls are eliminated.. it gets harder and harder for the remaining players to cover the field. Remeber, the ball must be thrown so it would be on a line that would pass between the 2 cones marking the other teams boundary. Each throw back and forth is on the coaches GO. A nice twist is to go a round or 2 with foam balls to encourage soft hands and 2 hands fielding or that ball WILL bounce out of the glove!! It won't take long for the girls to figure out it's best to throw the ball to the other team as if yo were skipping a rock across a pond to make it a challenge to field clean.

Here's a simple drill that that our coaches (10U) have been running which the girls seem to have lots of fun with:

- Split the girls into 2 even teams
- Team 1 lines up at Home Plate. Their objective is to run from Home to 2nd before Team 2 throws 3 balls to 2nd base
- Team 2 lines up at 3rd base. 3 balls are placed down the line between 3rd and Home plate. Their objective is to run to, pick up, & throw all 3 balls to 2nd base before the girl they're competing against runs from Home to 2nd.
- Each team will get a point depending on the success of the throws or the runner making it to 2nd first

It all depends what you're trying to do and how much space their is. I like to break my girls into 4 groups of 3 and give them scenarios, runner on 2nd 1 out, up by 2 and the coaches hop in to make it more competitive. If we are indoors we have 2 groups of 6, set up a full infield when we can, and play a full game where you can only bunt and slap. To make it fair, 1st and 3rd stay back and cannot crash until the bunter squares.

OFFENSIVELY
Sometimes we play "knockout" during front toss or machine hitting. Basic premise is the same as basketball knockout. So, if first batter hits it well, she's safe and goes to end of line. If batter doesn't hit it well, she is in limbo and the next batter hits. If the next batter hits it well, she knocks out the player in limbo. If she doesn't hit it well, the player in limbo is safe and goes to end of line and that second batter is now in limbo.

Splitting the team into groups and awarding points for working off the tee or toss makes it competitive. First team to 10 points wins. +1 for a line drive up the middle, -2 for anything else. Harder to get to 10 points than you think.

BASERUNNING
Put half the team at 2B and half the team at Home. Players at 2B go 2B to 2B and players at home go home to home. One trip around the bases for each player, first team to finish wins.

So girls are standing behind their own "baseline"? The throw hits their own side first, then must pass across the other team's baseline?

One that was pretty fun for a bit of conditioning and throwing is to place a pile of balls at each position, 1 for every player if you have enough. So, if there are 10 players, 10 balls where 3B would play, 10 at SS, 2B, and 1B. Put up a net at home. Girls start at home and when coach says GO he starts timing and they run to 3B. At each position they pick up one ball and throw it at the net. They do that for 3B, 2B, SS, then 1B, then run home to stop clock.

You can come up with a bunch of ways to adjust the time. Maybe 1 sec penalty for each bounce before the net, and 2 sec penalty for missing net altogether. Or for younger players maybe just shave seconds off if they can hit the net in any way.

Bunny on a Bucket (or ball on a tee game.) Set up groups of 3 in lines around the infield behind starting cones. Set a bucket with a stuffed animal on home plate (or soccer ball on a tee.) Coaches with buckets of balls are near HP hitting grounders, one at a time to the first girl in each line. Girls can't pass the cone until the ball is hit. After a few, they begin to realize that the harder they charge, the closer they get to the target. Award 3 points for a direct hit, 2 points for a bounce and one point for hitting the bucket (or tee.)
