So Cal
I had to get a new truck the smell was so bad.
We now use SneakerBalls by TX-3 and they definitely help. I'd definitely keep a few in the glove compartment!

My DD sticks 3 of those things in each cleat as soon as she takes them off. Her cleats still reek.

We tried everything. Nothing worked until someone suggested we try Fresh Fogger. Worked amazing and we have three softball players in the house with putrid cleats.

Not that this will help NOW, since the cleats are already stinky - but I would buy a boot dryer, and throw the shoes on there to dry ASAP after taking them off. I bought one at Aldi for $11, and it works great!

I put them in plastic zip lock bags, throw them in the freezer for a couple days, and that seems to kill whatever bacteria is causing the funkiness.

Yeah I do it with my son's football cleats, especially after a rainy/muddy game or practice. They smell like an animal died and then a cat peed on it, but seems to do the trick. They need to be dry first, then frozen or else they're just going to be wet again when they thaw from the freezer.

For my first attempt I did the bucket with oxy clean. Left them in for half a day, then pulled them out and scrubbed them well and washed them off under hot water for about 5 mins each. Left in the sun to dry for the day then left over the ac/heater vents to dry overnight. Then I did the fresh fogger someone else mentioned. We'll see how well it works after this coming Saturday's practice. They do look pretty nice and clean again, at least! The true test will be the first tournament weekend, which isn't until the last weekend of this month.
