When there are double bags at first base, is the first baseman required to use the inside bag, or can they use the outside bag for a force out as well?

If the throw pulls the 1st basemen to into foul ground they can use the outside bag, in this case runner can then use either one.

I am interested in the responses to this post as this situation happened this fall when DD was playing first. She was pulled into foul territory fielding a grounder and stepped on the outside bag to make the out (had to run back at an angle). The runner was called out but DD received a warning from the umpire for using the outside bag - he said that the outside bag always goes to the runner. It was a close play and she would not have been able to get the out if she had to go around the outside bag to the inside bag to make the tag...

In the situation I witnessed this weekend, the ball was fielded deep in the hole by the 2nd baseman and the 1st baseman recieved the throw with her foot on the outside (orange) bag. Runner was called out and nothing was disputed but it brought up the question about whether the runner should have been safe since the 1st baseman was on the wrong bag.

Not true for ASA anyways.

"On any force out attempted from the foul side of first base ...", fielder can use either base.

Ok, so run in front of the runner to cause a collision? It's a "safety" bag. She did the right thing.
