Greg Maddux on 0-2 “Waste Pitches”

I think we are missing one of the key points here. What is worse: A ball on an 0-2 pitch or a hit on an 0-2 pitch? Pitching a ball several inches outside has a very low probability of giving up a hit still with a chance of a strikeout. Pitching the ball over the plate (or even on a corner) has a...

Greg Maddux on 0-2 “Waste Pitches”

One thing that has not been addressed so far is using a "waste" pitch to SETUP the next pitch. I have called pitches for many games and I'm sure most on here know how effective that can be. For example, say you got strike 1 inside and strike 2 outside and it is 0-2. Another one or even two...

Distracted ump (1st base coach)..what's the call?

I have umpired high school and D3 college. Definitely out at home is correct call.

    2-Strike Hitting

Good stuff, I’m taking notes and always learning.

    2-Strike Hitting

Thanks for responding,, you guys make good points and I am taking that into consideration. Well of course this all depends on each individual hitter and situation. If your daughters are consistently making contact regardless of strike 0, 1 or 2 then of course I would not promote anything...

    2 strike hitting

I posted this also in the Practical because it is kind of a tweener. I’m looking for ways to help my 18U players strike out less as there are too many with runners on base. They are all veteran players, all decent hitters, and since they are older and mostly engrained in their hitting...

    2-Strike Hitting

I’m looking for ways to help my 18U players strike out less as there are too many with runners on base. They are all veteran players, all decent hitters, and since they are older and mostly engrained in their hitting style/mechanics I decided not to make any major changes with them. I have...

    Pitching to a Lefty slapper

We are playing a team soon with several Lefty slappers in the lineup. Thought it might be good discussion (and maybe help us out) as to best way to pitch to them. I have seen some coaches start to bust them inside but I also see righty pitchers struggle doing this for some reason and end up...

    Bats 101

She is almost 5’5” and weighs about 120. Definitely a 31 inch IMO, 32 I believe would be too long. I did not know there were “slapper” bats. What gives it that designation I wonder?

    Bats 101

I was never interested in studying all of the latest and greatest fast pitch bats as far as composite, double wall, single wall, end loaded, balanced, etc, etc. And then you throw in all the different name brands and it all makes your head spin. I remember the days when the aircraft aluminum...

    12year old DD any suggestions

I do see the slight hunch forward. But I also see some overlap, unless I don’t understand overlap fully she appears to be heading forward before her arm finishes going backward the video doesn’t go slo mo until after that. As far as brush I find that very difficult to get any pitchers to...

    12year old DD any suggestions

Mostly a rec player, might play some travel ball this summer. Throws decent speed, has a changeup with a fast arm motion and tried to teach her IR a few years ago when started pitching. Looks to me like she is half IR or at least partly there. Any tips from the experts are appreciated...

    Proper Stretch and Fire

What's funny is I teach high school Calculus and what you just described is harder for me to understand than the Calculus. I appreciate the response but I am trying to keep it simple. The coach in the video shows everything turning in unison: hips, shoulders, hands. What I am asking is shouldn't...

    Proper Stretch and Fire

Just starting to get into using this drill for my team as I like how it puts a direct emphasis on the back leg power. But I watched a youtube video (see below) and he emphasizes using all hip rotation and letting the hands just go along for the ride. This does not sound right to me as we want...

    Hitting the Low pitch

I am looking for some confirmation (or rebuttal) about how I teach hitting the low pitch. I teach staying tall, strong, full rotation of course, and throwing the bat head down to the ball. I ran into a coach that wants the kids to bend or crouch down to get the low pitch, lowering the head and...

    wide stance issues

I have read a good portion of the IR and Drive Mechanics stickies and have many years in softball coaching and have become a "developing" pitching coach. One particular high schooler I have been working with has developed decent IR and drive mechanics and has increased her speed, improved her...

    Rise Ball and IR

I am speaking about follow thru more than anything. I am thinking about cutting under the ball at release, Palm up of course, and then following thru after that. It seems unnatural to follow thru a rise ball with ending up Palm down.

    Rise Ball and IR

I do understand IR is more than Palm down at finish and yes I am probably focusing too much on that. I am trying to force every detail I read about IR into a rise ball pitch. I am hearing and understanding now that Palm down is not absolutely necessary for IR mechanics, especially for a rise ball.
