You stated the ball and runner arrived very close together, now if the runner deviated (i.e. slowed, changed direction) from her/his original base path prior to the defender having possesion of the ball, that is the classic definition of obstruction. That is why the defender should be called...
On a batted ball, YES! Otherwise, why should they?
If a runner slides directly into a bag, how is she going to knock down a defender?
A defender can not be called for interference. There is not just one spot to catch an incoming ball!
No, the runner is doing exaclty what he/she is allowed...
Why should the defense be allowed hinder the offense, when it can not properly defend a base? In your line of thinking, the OFFENSE should not have to give up a clear path to the base just because the DEFENSE is trying to field a ball.

Thanks for all the suggestions!
I do not expect these girls to be stud pitchers, just to develop a little consistency. My plans right now are to try and get two girls that show promise in the draft. I will use 1 of the 3 weekly practices(Saturday) as pitcher...
Thanks
Hal,
Thanks for the link. The issue here is most of parents of these kids are not going to pay for a pitching coach and most of the kids are not going to put forth the extra effort. After all it is a recreation league.
Thanks Again!
