IMO, a coach doesn't do that unless he or she is in it for him or herself. A real coach identifies and fixes the areas that are lacking long before Nationals.
Get your girls in the mindset of 'the faster they come in, the faster they go out'.
I agree with Screwball, as much as I hate pitching machines, they can a handy tool to instill confidence in young players learning to hit faster pitching. Usually, after one session with a consistent machine...
Great advice above about letting your DD dictate when pitching practice will be. When my DD first said she wanted to pitch I told her that there were two types of pitchers: pitchers who say they want to pitch and pitchers who show they want to pitch. Your DD probably did sense your...
Agreed. That is exactly why I pass out a questionnaire before every tryout. In addition to asking from which side they throw and hit from and what positions they play, I always ask the following:
Why do you play softball?
Why did you leave your last team?
What do you like least about...
I asked an umpire friend of mine why crow hopping is never called around here and he pretty much told me exactly what you said above. The problem I have with that is most of the crow hoppers I see are considered some of the better pitchers. Coincidence? I honestly don't know but it does make...
I assume that in regards to the area behind home plate "the foul side of the first base line" is defined as anything on the 1B side of an imaginary line drawn from the 1B side of home plate to the backstop? In other words, if, on a dropped third strike the ball gets behind the catcher, she...
Who asked you to take over? Assuming it wasn't the parents themselves, you have a great opportunity to observe both the players and the parents before you start. This way you'll know who you need to replace at tryouts.
I once had a player tell me that when she ran in on the fly balls she slowed down and let the ball bounce to her because she was afraid to let the ball get past her. It made sense given I'd heard (and said) a million times, "OF, NOTHING GETS BY YOU" She was just doing as she was being told...
A stopwatch works wonders for this. Time them from H-H and sit back and watch as they want to keep going again and again to beat their previous times and/or teammates.
Another one I like is to put 3-5 balls about 10' apart up the third base line, and 3-5 balls about 10' apart up the first base...
This would have been a great story had your DD sent a low outside pitch over the right field fence. The way I see it, she hit a meat pitch over the fence and you're trying to take credit for it by changing her mechanics during the game. Meat pitches are supposed to be hit hard, and a lot of...
Funny you say that. This fall I took a bunch of 14 yo rec girls with the intent of helping them prepare for HS ball tryouts this winter. My first order of business was to try to teach them to throw correctly. In our first warm up drill, I made sure they started sideways. It didn't take long...
Lots of good drills posted so far, most of which I have used at one point or another. A couple more I use from time to time is two ball catch and quick-throw drill.
The two ball catch is self-explanatory. On the quick throw, I'll either have two players catch and throw to each other as...
Yeah, the girls in the OF stations definitely get more reps than those at the live arm station. I make sure that my assistants in the OF rotate the girls through each station more than once, or they work on more than one thing at each station and rotate through more than once (different pitch...
Having girls standing around in practice is a pet peeve of mine, too, and I think live hitting is the best practice they can get (although it's time consuming so we don't do it every practice). What I do to avoid standing around while live hitting is break them down into groups. One will be...
