I don't think your assumption is anywhere near correct. We have a version of "poles" at our school and it is to run around either one or all three of the outfield fences and count the poles. By the way the number for all 3 is 72 poles.
If the fielder had chosen to make the play to first while ignoring any runners and if that play would have resulted in the batter being out barring any fielder's errors it is a FC and should count against the batter's average.

We use Coaches Eye on the iPad. The last couple of generations of iPad capture the video at 60 fps. Super easy to mark up and share. Has a new version for PC that is still kinda beta and an Android version I've never used. Doesn't cost much and I think it's way worth it.
