Colleges/Universities with high academic standards (engineering)

That's just it, in the fall DI has 20+ hour weeks although less travel but at least the DIII programs that my DD's former teammates are in are no comparison workload and stress-wise and we're not talking P5 here.

Well, the prior player's mother's issue is with the lack of physical training support with regards to injuries et. al. She didn't care about press boxes, lights, et. al. Kudos to Coach K, but as far as 3 time conference championships, everyone knows it's on the back of Coppersmith so it...

Colleges/Universities with high academic standards (engineering)

Just be advised that the UMBC athletic facilities leave a lot to be desired; one of DD's travel teammates had a sister that recently graduated there and her mother ranted about how poorly the facilities were as far as injury rehab, etc. Also, my DD went to a softball camp there as was extremely...

Colleges/Universities with high academic standards (engineering)

Be advised that certain schools like UNC, UVA, Virginia Tech, etc. have *in state* requirements by law; e.g. 80% for some like UNC as I recall.

Colleges/Universities with high academic standards (engineering)

My DD HS varsity softball team mate who was a 2020 graduate is at West Point where the coach tried to get her to play but considering they have lift BEFORE the daily 0600 formation, she passed. ;-)

Colleges/Universities with high academic standards (engineering)

Well, the sooner DD decides on which major to pursue the easier to down-select since there's a big difference between mechanical and aerospace programs at schools. As far as *high-academic* softball DI conferences, Patriot League schools are a great option since they are like Ivy League as far...

    Trick Plays

Surprisingly, GMU pulled this play off on singles probably around 3 out of 4 times this year that I witnessed, and at least one of them turned out to be the eventual winning run. I couldn't believe that worked at the DI level. SMH

    Why College Softball is Different….

Funny you should mention that, since someone came up to my wife today at DD's game and asked her which player was hers because he couldn't tell, since she cheered for every girl. ;-) Although, that has always been our way regardless of the level and regardless of the sport.

    Moving up in the box

Nah. If the batter gets hit, then it will make them think twice about crowding the plate next time especially for a backdoor rise/curve. ;-) i.e. unlike calling a a drop ball w// a runner on 3B, AFAIC, a backdoor curve reward > risk. ;-)

    Good Luck College Players/Parents

And, crappy score keeping! Do we really need to pad the batting stats by not calling obvious errors!? What is this rec league!? FULL DISCLAIMER: Bias due to being a score keeper over the years who ALWAYS gives an error if it goes between the wickets and/or off the glove unless they are diving...

    Moving up in the box

One of my favorite DD pitches is her backdoor curve. Makes me crack up every time I see one of those aggressive hitters up in the box and she makes them bail out on a called strike with her backdoor curve breaking across the inside corner. :-D

    Softball during Final Exams

Well, the other issue is that their farthest travel games are the weekend right before final exams. FWIW, DD spent the previous 2 weekends before fall final exams home cramming for several days straight which paid off, so I guess she'll just have to plan accordingly this spring.

    Softball during Final Exams

So, how is it possible to play your conference tournament during final exams week!? DD *survived* her first DI fall semester, but looking at the spring softball schedule the conference tournament starts the same day as finals week. How's that going to work!?

    Avoiding bad organizations

Having DD recently completed her recruiting journey this year, let me try to steer this thread back to your original question. ;-) Some lessons-learned and recommendations... As with ALL things in life, it's all about *expectation management* and EVERY DD's journey is different due to MANY...

    Meetings with Coach

Nothing to worry about. A good coach will appreciate her being hard on herself and her extra work. AFAIC, freshman shouldn't expect any playing time let alone starting unless they earn it which is what I told my daughter who is also a freshman, but due to other teammate injuries, it looks like...
