You're right, it doesn't have to be a gymnastics balance beam. Our pitching coach has one made of 2x4 boards. So its about 4 inches off the ground, and i'm thinking 6 inches wide. I think another problem in softball is that a lot of coaches ride the #1 pitcher way too much. Ive seen teams were team has 3-4 pitchers. But the #1 pitcher gets 75% of the innings. A tryout that is long to the point of being even over 4 hours that is well planned, organized and gives the player a lot of chances to show skills is actually a good thing. I did mean Bill Conroy's Beverly Bandits which his girls aren't professional (not the professional Chicago Bandits) to make clear. I agree with you that you should have the courtesy to say goodby face to face. But they are one of the top teams in the country and they run it like a business...- Softball scholar
