The Transition from AC to HC

Gunner you get it! Our job as a coach is to teach. Catchers have a much better perspective on batter position and pitch delivery. As the manager, you can suggest a pitch and teach between innings, but just as the pitcher might call off a pitch, we need to respect the catcher's calls too. I...

Enforcing the rules v. impacting the game

My guess is, he did see it. Umpires don't want the confrontation. Potentially from the coach and/or the parent. Over the years I've heard all of the (invalid) excuses by umpires: "She's not gaining an advantage" {where is that in the rule book?]. "It's only a little leap" {Officer, I only took a...

    Guest play

absdad: Great picture. Another point of reality, is that who really checks the rosters at tournaments anymore, and how really can they know if Sally Smith isn't Kathy Jones? Tournament directors don't want the hassle- A few years back I actually had a tournament director approach me to tell me...

Enforcing the rules v. impacting the game

I agree with everyone, except the part about being too harsh. I think the harsher the penalty, the quicker it gets resolved. If it's a light penalty, (just a ball on the batter) pitchers and coaches would more often knowingly take the chance. It's terrible that the ump is villified for ENFORCING...

    Guest play

Guest Player Not Fair It's fundamentally unfair to bring in a guest player. A proper team will have enough rostered players to play all season and should have enough dedicated players to show up for all events, if they are a serious (fair) team. Once guest players are part of the mix, you have...

Case study for softball coaches and other sports.

Encourage Suzy to play other sports and let her 'rest' from softball in the off season. Yes, I know there are coaches out there saying in order to keep up with the Jones' you need to concentrate all year on one sport, but that is a myopic view. Consider a few points: -Repetitive Stress Injuries...

    Interacting with Umpires

So many good comments (and extended topics) from so many... For the most part, over time, the good calls balance the bad calls. It's a numbers thing. Sure, there are officials out there that are "Hometown" officials, or biased against a team in a game, for various reasons. One reason can be in...

Deciding Who To Charge for Bat Bags...

We are a non profit team. At the end of the year, we take all expenses and divide by 12 (or whatever we carry on roster.) This year, we are getting new bat bags - backpacks. However the catchers can't fit all of their gear in them, despite how much we water it down and make it shrink. :) Anyway...

What to do with pitchers with all different coaches???

PACoach: I was out at a showcase in Edison this weekend, and I got a good tip from the Pennsbury Gems coach. I'm always looking to pick stuff up for the future, and by golly, I love the Christmas question! I'm going to use it if the time comes if you don't mind. SoCalBlue: I agree that each...

    Situation opinions please

I hate the timed games. On some rare occasions, a tournament director will give the umpire leeway to extend the time limit if they detect a coach trying to secure a win by means such as an extra mound conference etc. Like stoppage time in soccer, the umpires should always be given this leeway...

Does Indoor Pitching Create Mechanical Problems

It's good to hear people are concentrating on dragging the foot and pitching legally. This is something the umpires are doing a better job at watching each year. Kudos!

    backing up first

There's merit to both sides of the argument. Most overthrows will be angled out towards right field, so the cost/benefit may not pay off by percentage.

Posted this elsewhere, can get a response. Open to anyone now.

Force Play and Basepath First of all, let's cover the force. It's the same as baseball. With a runner on first, a ground ball is hit to the 1st baseman. There is a force at second. However, if the 1st Baseman chooses to first go over and touch first base, it REMOVES the force play at...

    practice good game bad

Insignificant Probably Psychological. The difference at those speeds is insignificant. At 90 mph the difference is 23/1000 of a second.
