not sure what's wrong with this scenario...assuming the coach is "pretty good." those teams play because they are having fun working at the game not to get a college scholly. a lot of those kids will get the bug and work really hard to make a more competitive team. others may not and play "B/C"...
im in the NW...our tryouts usually are in july/august. teams form up in august after tryouts and play sept-july. teams have individual tryouts throughout the year to pick up players as needed. interesting how other regions do it differently
bumping this as i was thinking about this today...seems like younger 10s and 12s should be encouraged to finish two handed to ensure complete swing and they are more capable/flexible of physically doing it that way without an effect on their metrics.

travel ball coach perspective...
kids have favorite positions and should let their coach know what they are. coaches make line-ups so ultimately their call. there are many levels of travel ball teams...what's more important to your player? playing her favorite position or playing on a good team...

i'm caught....later in practice i took the catchers and we worked on receiving/blocking with them behind a screen. i was feeling great and letting it rip...not 100% but a good 75% "K" with a step...i felt the tightness then and went back...
