    Leaving early and other calls

They don't need to go over every play; but if you know softball you know the umpires blew this call. If you don't know softball, it would be a good teaching point and the explanation could be done rather quickly.

Is running out of the base line, home to first line, Appeal-able

You can understand the concerns of the umpires on this board, especially since this very same question was asked in a recent post. http://www.discussfastpitch.com/softball-rules-questions/28468-verbal-call-question.html The information BretMan asked for is because it matters what you or the...

    Verbal Call Question

One could argue that the BU should have made the call as it was the first play on the infield. PU had to stay close to home in case of a play at HP. BU has the play in front of them (rundown to 3B) and then has to quickly look for the B/R and any calls involving her/him. PU is still in good...

    Leaving early and other calls

I just don't know why/how this wasn't called. This game actually was one of the most exciting games of the Super Regionals, but to have this call missed or not called really shocks me. It ended up not affecting the outcome but the potential tying run moved from 1st to 3rd on two pitches with...

    Simulating pitch behind pitcher's plate.

Was the batter in the box, ready to hit while this was going on? Had the umpire signaled "Play"? Like Comp said, pitchers do this all the time. Umpires are only going to call a rule infraction if it is clear the pitcher is trying to deceive the batter, which is why the rule was written.

Did I make the right call?

Just to echo what has already been stated here... Possession is required "through the play" for a catch, but not a tag. You made the correct call. There's only one opinion that mattered during the play - yours. And you made the correct call (based on your description of the play).

    Appeal of check swing

Again, posting in haste gets me in trouble. Point taken. Now, back to work...

    what is an appealable play?

What is being described is not an appeal. You may ask the umpire who made the call to confer with their partner(s) in order to gain information they might not have had which could affect the call that was made. The umpire DOES NOT have to ask for help. If the umpire feels they had all the...

    Appeal of check swing

I exempt a check swing appeal from my previous post - those should be simple enough. I should have been more clear in my post. I was talking more about "normal" appeals like a pulled foot, missed tag, etc. Most coaches just start yelling and going on about the call, but they almost never ask...

    Appeal of check swing

Did 5 plate games this weekend in a tournament. I checked with my BU 2x by myself and had the coaches ask a couple of times. Smart coaches will either ask the umpire or teach the catcher to ask for an appeal. A catcher who simply points to the BU without asking the PU should get no response...

    Base vs safety bag obstruction

ASA rules are worded as such that nearly every collision requires some sort of call, whether it be OBS or INT. NCAA rules allow for a throw by the defense to cause "incidental" contact between the defense and a runner.

    Base vs safety bag obstruction

The OP is lacking some info, and my son is taking a nap, so I'll do some investigatin'... 1. Did F3 touch the base and have possession of the ball before being contacted by the BR? The OP sounds like either F3 did not touch 1st for the force or she attempted to tag the BR. 2. Did the umpire...

    Obstruction Rule - Another question

The protection ends when the base runner legally reaches the base they are protected to. Here's a situation where protection can be removed and the runner can be put out between the bases they were protected to and from. R2 on 1st, R1 on 3rd base, 2 out. Bouncing ball hit to F6. R2 is...

    Obstruction Rule - Another question

The OBS rule and subsequent base award is not affected by any other play on any other runner on the diamond. Once a runner is obstructed between 1st and 2nd, she could lay down in the basepath, stop and do calisthenics, do hopscotch, etc.; the defense could make outs on any other runners and...
