Don't have your hitter thinking about swinging at all when learning how to move this way. It's totally new so any thoughts outside of "how do I control my body from the pelvis to the shoulders" will distract from learning the new movement.
If you have your hitter focus on the movements deep inside the body which become the REAL reason for distal movements, you no longer have to think about things like "swinging".
The movement IS the swing and the swing IS the movement.

TJ,

We don't talk about swinging...we do talk in very basic core movements like pulling your butt back over your heels...or pulling back with both hips...

Her core moves 1,000 times better than even 2 months ago...

OK...let me phrase this differently...because I was referencing the involvement of the hands...at least for my DD2 - if we didn't consciously train the hands - specifically the rear hand to stay reasonably stacked over the rear elbow, we would still be struggling with the leveling issue aka DBSF that she has struggled with...and there is still plenty of room for improvement...

From a teaching point of view - in the most practical sense, ask a 12 year old of focus on the movements deep inside her body and let me know what kind of look you get...I say this in jest because I just asked my 15 YO DD1 that and I got the "WTH are you talking about Dad" look...

As for Stickpiles DD's...lots of good there in both...not sure why there are no comments on all the frontal plane movement though...CP

Stick, the core (hips, spine, etc) are driving the movement pattern during the swing. Watch how her a$$ (tailbone) is turning away from the target during the swing..

Similar to this.

As for the arms I would try to leave them in place and allow the core to transfer the energy to the arms/hands/barrel... The swing where she drags the barrel there is no transfer of energy... The arms are forcing the swing without leveraging the core which is why they drag or get ahead of any core movement. IOW's wait for the core to call on the arms/hands/barrel.

What does that feel like? How are you explaining that to a student?

Yes Chris - she is moving much better but one of the things that has been consistent is her front shoulder not getting pulled down inside the front hip during the initial Cat movement or pre swing actions. What I do is physically grab their shoulders - get them to relax their shoulders and put them in the position they need to be in and explain they do this by manipulating their spine muscles. We may have to stand up and just practice laterally bending and twisting just to get a feel for it.

The hands and thus bat should react to this initial spinal bending or the hitter is intentionally not letting their shoulders relax - which is a signal that they are still trying to control the swing with their shoulders.

Pretty much RD. Manipulate your spine so you bend and slightly twist (go easy on the twisting part) as just laterally bending the spine should produce some twist due to the natural shape of the spine. So try and keep your lower spine from excessively flexing or extending while doing this. When you loosen up and start to use those inner core muscles to create the movement of the spine - you should feel like you are bringing the side of rib cage and the side of pelvis together almost like a crimping feeling. And if you really pay attention your heel should lift slightly.

Try to imagine below that your spine is bending somewhat like the ruler and your front heel lifts as result like Teds

And I changed TDS's gif to what it feels like for me and hopefully it makes it easier to understand for the RH hitters.

Chris, I use the queue "work the barrel"(within the sagittal plane) constantly.. I want that to be synced up with the core/spine movements. So as the student begins to move correctly the hands should follow that movement not lead it.

My latest comments on stick's DD's is tied to the clips from behind... I would agree 100% with you on the frontal plane actions of the younger DD. Which IMO is caused by the rear leg being in control vs the core. The older DD has some of the sagittal plane movements we are looking for.
