Yeah Gerry or Chris if you guys can show this that would be great. I too would really like to see it in action.
Thanks

First we teach balance.

Now we spread them out about a shoulders width, bend at the waist and soften the knees and the glove is in the gathered position about chest high with the ball in the glove. They slide the back foot against the lead foot and then step with the lead foot separate the hands break and throw. Before long they will put a little rhythm to it like a dance move.

Howard, great stuff as always. Minor/quick question. We do this same open door throwing position in our throwing sequences. From ready/gather to takeaway on the top half. But we don't "slide back foot against lead foot" to initiate it. We just stride off the back foot.

I do like the rhythm and weight shift of what you describe, though. That's important, right? So I should probably add it to our drill.

Question though: Then, when you show them how throwing is like hitting, do you do that little side step too? Almost like a mini walk-up? Or do you eliminate it and just show a more standard load/separate/toe touch movement on the bottom?

I'm really teaching (stealing!) a lot of what you're advocating step-by-step, so I want to make sure I understand each step in the process clearly : >

Tks again.

Rooster,

Don't expect immediate results. These fundamental drills take time to build up the muscle memory and often it takes a year or two to correct bad habbits. The key is to constantly remind them and reinforce the good habits.
