The dreaded daddy-ball where the coach's DD plays 2B! You gotta hide her somewhere! I love it! You can let it bother you or you can just let it go. If you can't let it go find another team.

Hide at 2B? I'm not such a fan of that. When I'm putting together the defensive puzzle, I want someone solid at 2B. If it's a ground ball to the right side, I want that out every time! I also think that putting a weak arm at 2B is a mistake. I get the reason (shorter throw on a routine play), but I've found that a good arm will get you more outs on the balls they have to range for, bobble, or drop on the initial attempt. (IMO, YMMV)

Hiding somebody at 2nd base is a pretty bad idea. TBH if you want to be any good at any level above maybe 8U you cannot really hide anybody. At the 10U level we have lost about 5 games this year because our corner OF have let GB get past them. Skillset for SS and 2B should be about the same imo and it would probably make sense for coaches to interchange the two when they can (e.g. pool play) since many TB/HS SS get moved to 2B when they go play in college.

If at all possible, join an organization that does not have a player's parent who is also a coach. It's one of the best things you can do for your youth athlete. And I say this as a former softball & baseball coach from 6u - 10U. :)

One of the things that amazes me when watching college softball is how athletic the 2B players are. The outfield is so deep that they often are almost halfway out in the grass catching fly balls or ranging far to their left and right to make plays. I think often times our view of the defense is colored by watching MLB and men's slow pitch games where often the weakest fielder is hidden at 2B.

Our 2b are the ones who run to foul balls hit towards RF..

Though I watch the Braves and Ozzie is an awesome second basemen. He makes so many game saving plays.

I love how predictable this board is. I KNEW that my comment would bring out the 2B discussion ;) We all want 5 tool players at every position! It was supposed to be sarcastic and funny!

2Bs at the MLB level are often former SS who don't have quite the arm to play SS at the MLB level or are blocked by a better defensive SS who is already entrenched. I'm not sure classification as "weakest fielder" is an apt description. Though I can see the thread has drifted from the OPs original daddy ball rant.

OP, what age group is this you are playing? Maybe it was mentioned but I didn't see.
