As some of you know, my dad was diagnosed with cancer early last year and passed away in December. Fastpitch softball was a major part of his life when he was younger and he enjoyed coming East to watch DD play the game he loved. When he could no longer travel, last summer some of the DFP family helped DD get picked up on a team in Ohio where my parents live so he could watch her play one last time.

Fast forward to now. My mom arrived in town yesterday, coming to Massachusetts alone for the first time without dad, exactly 4 months to the day he passed. It was an emotional day to say the least. Today, Mimi got to see DD play for her HS team for the first time. In her last at bat of the day, against the reigning state champs she hit her first ever OTF home run with 2-on and 2-outs.

It's a bitter-sweet day. I am so happy that my mom was there to see it; but sad that dad missed it.
He would have been so very proud of her!

This post has special meaning to me. I am a Grandpa who is lucky enough to have my Granddaughter playing H.S. and travel just a 2 hour drive up the road. I don't know why
but for some reasons Granddaughters have an extra special place in our hearts. #7Dad, you can be assured that Grandpa is now watching every game. When your daughter is
on the field and feels a slight breeze, that is Grandpa letting her know he is cheering for her and has her back.

It may have been scored and looked like a 3-run homer to everyone there, but I'm betting that Grandpa also was on base, which would make it a grand slam in the scorebook of life.

In the end it won't be whether they won or lost but the memories like this that we keep from the game. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you for this, from the bottom of my heart.

My Dad passed away unexpectedly a month ago, and I haven't been on DFP. I popped back on today and read your story. It made me cry.

Strangely enough, a week after he passed, my daughter also hit her first HS OTF, grand-slam.

I think these Grandpa's are with our girls, on the field, because Grandpa knows where their hearts are ❤

I wish you and your family peace and happy memories and I'm truly so sorry for your loss.

Thank you. I agree, Grandpa's are their biggest fans and will always be with them in mind and spirit.
I'm sorry you lost your Dad as well. We've found that telling stories and sharing memories have been powerful medicine in helping the healing. I wish you much peace to you and your family as you grieve his loss.
