A tag is a fake tag when applied with no ball in glove.Correct. I don't even think it's really an umpire judgment thing as RAD suggests. If the ball is/was in the glove, an umpire is not going to call a fake tag. They're calling a fake tag when the ball is in right field and the SS is pretending there's a throw from the catcher and dropping a tag on a runner.
No matter where the ball is on the field.
Whether it was intended to be a fake tag or not is what I was commenting about.
A defensive player may know the ball has fallen out of their glove and still apply a tag. ( ball got away from them and they are staying at the bag while another player retrieves the ball)
By applying a FAKE TAG a runner may be FAKED into thinking the ball is still in their glove and not just pop up to then turn the base to look to the next base.
( because they think the ball is right there in glove next to them, when it is not)
Example: catcher throws to second base and shortstop takes their eye off the ball the last moment the ball might hit or go in their glove but not stay in it but continue to make a tag and the shortstop may know they do not have the ball.
( they're absolutely are times when defensive players know they don't have the ball, and may hold a tag, to hold the runner)
To fake or not to fake
Cuz ball coming out of glove happens.
