Let me first start by saying this is a great forum. A lot of great info here.

My question is about how to score a certain play. Routine ground ball to shortstop. She is playing back , doesn't charge the ball but fields it cleanly. Makes a rainbow throw to first but the runner beats the throw and is called safe. While this might not technically be an error on the shortstop , if the runner later comes around to score , is the run charged to the pitcher?

Thanks

If it's not an error and the runner comes around to score on more non-errors, it's an earned run and charged to the pitcher. You can't rule that it's not an error and also an unearned run. Someone has to take the hit, so to speak.

We call these un-charged errors, and try to take note of them. Sometimes, the errors that don't go down in the score book are more damaging than the ones that do.
