There is some gray area between a tap (bunt) and a soft slap (swing) - how/where do you draw the line?

I would suggest dropping the term "slap bunt", there is no such thing. It is either a slap attempt or a drag bunt.

The ASA rule book also does not define a slap, yet both the terms "drag bunt" and "slap hit" are used in the ASA case book.

While many may look at that as an indicator in some cases, there is nothing in the rules which support this statement.

If you review soft slap technique youll see that the slapper is trying NOT to break the wrist to soften the slap. So I agree with you MTR as this is a potentially flawed criteria IMHO.
