If you want to make the DP field in the first inning, is it best practice to leave no position next to their name on the original lineup card and then after the plate meeting inform the umpire the DP is playing defense. Especially when that player is the catcher and it can affect courtesy runners.

Or would you leave one player in the lineup without a position and put DP and the position next to the DP’s name? Just like you do with the flex.

Some confusion the other night and the umpire didn’t even seem to understand the Dp and flex could field at the same time. And for those that use DP in the field, do you report position changes or only substitutes. And DP playing defense is not a substitution (unless for the flex player).

Thanks

The DP does not get a position number on the lineup card other than just DP. It is not a requirement to report defensive position changes to the umpire, so if the DP is going to play defense for anyone other than the pitcher or catcher you dont even have to tell the umpire, simply put them on defense. As a courtesy you can tell them if you wish but there is no requirement to do so.

As for pitcher and catcher, the only reason you would have to report the DP playing for those positions is for courtesy runner purposes. Fill out your lineup card and just list whatever player you are going to have sit out on defense listed as your pitcher or catcher and list the DP as such on the lineup card. Submit your lineup to the umpire and after it is confirmed and accepted simply tell the umpire that you are going to have your DP play defense for whichever position they are going to be in. They are now the pitcher or catcher of record on the lineup.
