Does anyone use a double cut for balls hit to the gaps with runners on base or when playing on fields with no fences. These are sure doubles and possible 3B or HR and could have a play at HP by a runner on 1B.
By double cut I mean 2B and SS are staggered and both in line with 3B or HP, 1B follows the runner to 2B. If the throw misses the first cut the second cut is there to prevent the runner from scoring.

How does this work for you and how hard was it to master?

Not sure exactly what you're asking. We do use the pitcher to back up throws from outfield to cut-off. We (along w/ most teams we play) allow the catcher to call "cut 2" or "cut 3" in which pitcher can cut ball thrown home and re-direct to either base where play is to be made if play at plate not the best chance for out. Also, 1b is backing up catcher for us in that situation.

Only problem I see with that situation is 1B following the runner. If there's ever more than a one base hit, 1B should be heading home to back up the catcher. That's really the only position they back up.
