DD just got back from a big name softball camp/visit out west. They were told Freshman were not required to stay in the dorms, and were allowed to stay with team mates off campus in order to keep costs down.

Although there are common scenarios, every school is different. I agree with Sluggers that Freshman off campus with Juniors and Seniors is a bad idea. For DD #4 while in JUCO stayed in an athletic dorm on campus with plenty of security cameras and a Sheriff substation co-located in the center of the complex. Curfew was typically at 11:00PM with random bed checks, etc. One of the AC was also an RA at the dorm. At first she was not keen on the idea but now acknowledges that it was a very good arrangement.

At SC she is off campus in an apartment with 3 other players. That was the arrangement that was suggested but certainly not required. Freshman players are required to live in the dorms, then free to do whatever after first year. However some teams like the women's basketball team require that every player spends all 4 years, on campus in the dorms.

It is working for the students, the coach or both? Is "working" defined by the win/loss percentage of the team?

College coaches want to win to make more money. They have little problem trashing the academic career of their players in order to win. College coaches manipulate players all the time. Putting a freshman in a situation where they are under the guidance/control of older players is simply giving the coach more control over the freshman.

Generally, the kids will spend many, many hours with their teammates. Players need to meet and spend time with people *other* than athletes.

A freshman may emulate certain behaviors of the older players in order to "impress" them. This can lead to poor decision making.
